Just because it's meant to be satirical doesn't excuse it from

being shitty.
The design was well done despite it being silly. It was an

excellent submission in a fun contest. Everything doesn't
have to be so serious.

It's not IN the world. It's just apart of a contest that was
intended to be fun for those who participate. Not everything
regarding Dark Souls, even an official contest, has be serious.

As satire it's all well and good, the humor falls short of me, I
suppose. I figured that if someone is going to go through the
effort of creating a shield design, then it ought to be taken
seriously to a certain extent. If once the shields get chosen, and
a list of the best shields not selected is made then Ill enjoy it a
whole lot more than seeing blatent shenanigans on the first page
of a contest that is genuinely interesting and clever on From's
part.
It's just a shield contest. Don't get butthurt over a couple of

funny designs that are just made to giggle out. It's also not
like the community completely expects to be chosen. One a
side note, the design is really well done despite its humors
intent. I thought it was a well done, funny piece. Competitors
can also submit various designs. Not EVERY design has to be
serious. Ever heard of having fun?

I'll grant you that my original post was strongly worded-

being drunk tends to lend towards aggression, but I would
point out this is merely an opinion-seeking to chastise or
admonish me for sharing it in a public forum is, frankly, a
waste of time. yes, the shield is well designed, but it is by
my reasoning that there had ought to be at least some
divider between serious posts and those that are there for
a laugh. Should an individual check in on that contest to
see if there are any great designs, and see a bunch of
nonsensical patterns instead, they may get to thinking it
isn't worth the effort to investigate further than the first
page. yes, many will, but the fact remains that such
shields may very well act as a deterrent for some viewers.
tl;dr My post may have been a bit impassioned. the shield
is well designed, but is nonetheless not the sort of thing I
feel should be on the first page of the contest, given the
multitude of brilliant designs.
It's just how it is with the voting system. Silly, yet well
done designs are destined to be the most voted up.
The team in charge of the shield contest at From
Software is going to a have a bitch of a time picking
out the shield they want to put in the game.

Nah they're the most serious ones when it comes to Dark Souls, /v/ got
angry because they thought the Marcus Shield would not fit (and I tend to
agree)
The Marcus shield is terrible. ENB is fine, but his fans are the worst.

Yeah, I think the tally one is guaranteed to make it. It makes me think
of Tarkus.
I wouldn't use it myself, because I'm more for pristine shields.
I'm hoping that the shield of the giant makes it. The shield that looks
like an archstone?
I was working on a tally shield the day before I saw that on the top
page. I'm kind of (seriously) disappointed, but I would be ecstatic if a
tally shield actually ended up in the game.

Regrettably, yes. However I realize (and understand why) many

While the shield is awesome as well as badass, wouldn't that ability

make it kind of OP in PvP?
I don't see how a slow-ish downward shield bash could be terribly

Being able to penetrate invincibility frames is a pretty OP ability

if there isn't some sort of negative aspect to the shield to
balance it out.
Also, weight isn't necessarily a negative, just look at the whole
Giantdad fiasco. Heavy equipment that had its negative
attributes countered by stat-buffing items like Havel's Ring, the
FaP Ring, and the DWG Ring.
From'll probably include items like these in DSII, so there would
have to be an additional check put on this shield so that it
doesn't become part of another exploitative set of equipment like
the Giantdad. Giving it a terrible moveset would be a good start,
since the idea of the shield is to have it double as a weapon.
Give it only that one downward move, with no shield bash or any
swiping attacks so that it becomes such a situational piece of a
equipment as to prevent cheesing.
Or maybe some sort of negative status effect like HP drain.
Giving it low defense ratings or low stability would obviously
work, too.

Keep in mind, it's a "two handed" attack which means you

must have it equipped in your main hand AND be two
handing it to land the blow.

Only if FROM implements it exactly as it's suggested. I think it could

be balanced, and having something more useful then the shield
bash would be nice.
I think its just a unique concept. Might argue with the bit about
the i-frames but even if it's implemented differently, it would be
sick.

Personally my very favourite one was the shield that was literally just a huge
titanite slab. I thought that idea was just so damn cool. Yet hardly anyone saw
it.
I saw that one. But a giant guillotine is cooler imo.

Something like this for the item description.
Regular wooden shield painted over by an artist gone mad. With little paint
around some of the strange picture was drawn with dirt or blood. Even on
death's door his passion never faltered.

I don't understand what the point of this post is other than to say "look how
crappy the ppl's efforts are". First off there are some stellar designs submitted by
a few artist , graphic designers etc take a look around (mines on this forum). For
the rest i'd say well, what do u expect? they are just reg community members
who gave it a shot, not everyone has an eye for design. Btw where's your design
dude? The real crime is the bad designs which get alot of votes via FB
friends,twitch, etc which buried the good work.
I can't be the only one who actually enjoys seeing all the designs, good and bad.
It's far better than the usual "near death" or "TIL" screenshots we get daily.
I have seen some cool looking shield designs in the contest but even most of the
ones I like seem too gaudy, the thing I like about Dark Souls that sets it apart
from any other dark fantasy game is the clean design and aesthetic sense the
weapons/armor have, no need for all the superfluos spikes and blades

Yeah, I think simple shields look better in the game. It would also be easier
for the team to make changes, I really like how they made the sanctus
shield look.
I can only hope this competition is just a publicity noise maker. Even though there
are some half decent designs in the mix, I don't trust anyone with designing this
game but From. End of story.

I wish From would just take every submission into account and decide the top 30
for themselves. That's what they've done for the Japan contest. No skewed voting
system to influence the winners; entries just go straight to From. For 2 weeks I
spent all my free time working on my design and all I've got is 8 votes because I
haven't got a million facebook friends. Whereas I think if From saw it, they might
recognise how hard I tried to match the Souls aesthetic and I may have had a
chance. Heck, I would be happy just to know that they'd seen it and maybe liked
it, but I know they won't when it's buried at the bottom of the facebook voting
app.

Who said anything about lying? You have the option to not
say anything at all. But yes, the idea is to not hurt feelings.

Granted, instead of the "this sucks, and you suck" route,

those who commented should have stated why they
thought it was a poor design, and make suggestions to
the ends of how to improve the design.
From that point, its up to them on how they respond to
feedback.

edit: it's a good first draft. needs more work but a good example of a
lower gear level shield as literally every shield I've seen has been a big
monolithic demon head or some super intricate end-game type shield.
Yea I'm not a fan of how most the designs look like they weigh
80 pounds.

yeah, I don't like those types of shields. My favorite shield in the

game is the Warrior's Round Shield. I thought Dark Soul's
aesthetic was characterised by how grounded it was, so that's
why I steer clear of the obvious fantasy look.

If he hadn't displayed such confidence that his design was the best
and stated how unfair it was that he got so few votes no one would
have said anything. I think some tact could have been used, but his
shield clearly isn't any of the things he stated it was so some
humility on his part could have saved some pain.

It's a fair enough point that he might have seemed too confident
in thinking 'if only From could see my design then it would be
picked'. I agree that I don't feel it matches the Souls' aesthetic
as claimed. But just saying, "that's pretty bad dude", or "I can
see why you only have 8 votes" does nothing except make some
moron feel empowered because they belittled someone they
don't know on the internet. If someone doesn't like it just ignore
it and move on, or offer constructive criticism. For example, ask
what is the design supposed to represent? Is there a meaning
behind it? It doesn't look like something I've seen in DkS. And so
on, maybe try to help him/her out rather than just saying you
think it sucks.
I said "might" and "may" when talking about being chosen. I was
hoping they would like it, but not confident or certain they
would.

I understand that but you have to see why it might make

people think that. This is the Internet. Not a lot of thoughtful
intelligent people Around most of the time. I think it's a good
first attempt. But it's not something I would immediately see
in DkS. The symbolism doesn't make me think of DkS, or
doesn't seem like it's associated with any lore. Is there a
meaning behind it?
Maybe this shield was used by Vampire hunters. Maybe

the bat is a symbol of a cult. Maybe it was fashioned in a
bats image and imbued with bleed blocking magic. Maybe
it was used by the bodyguards of an occult priest. It's left
up to From to invent or interpret their own lore. I just
made something that could appear meaningful if you use your
imagination. I'm not going to design it like it's part of the
current game, because the sequel is going to have it's own
lore.
Yes it's going to have it's own lore, but it helps when
you have a set idea of the meaning behind your shield.
What was your motivation for the design? My favorite
designs are when the designer explains where the
inspiration for the design came from, it allows me to
fully appreciate what they were trying to do. That's
just my personal take on it.

different?
Completely missing the point. Sure you can say it sucks, but why
bother? Do you really have nothing better to do than look at
other people's hard work and tell them you think it sucks? Also a
chef is a professional, this guy isn't. He's just an amateur who
worked hard for two weeks creating something he thought
people would like. Why tell him it sucked? If you don't like it,
don't be an asshole, just move on. Or think of something
constructive to say. Saying "it's shit" doesn't help anyone.

It was an interesting choice to keep the bat's wings largely suggested

rather than just making a regular bat shield. I feel like that's largely the
reason your design is so polarizing. What was the thought process/what
were you trying to convey by that design choice? Or was it a purely
aesthetic choice?
Oh and I love the shading work you did, and the cuts and dings you
added on the ears.
Thanks man. I mainly did the wings that way because I wanted it to
look like an emblem that was designed to be nailed onto a shield.
Like it was standard issue, so they made a mold that could be put
on any type of round shield. I also really wanted to have that
european gothic style incorporated somehow, so I made the wings
look like the sort of thing you might see sculpted on a cathedral wall
or something.
Despite what people have said, I still think From would have liked it.
I did it in line with designs like the Brass Set, the Silver Knight
spear, Anor Londo and even Dohmnal. Things that may not
encompass the entire souls look, but are part of a distinct and
specific aesthetic that I hope appears in the sequel in some way.
Who says they won't see it? Anyways, screw it, at the very least
it's good practice. Also I like that you went with a wooden shield
rather than a big fuckoff greatshield or something. Looks like it'd
be nice and light, good for a speedy build. Speaking of which,
any preferences on its stats?
Probably 80 physical block. 30-40 Lighting and Fire block. 70

Magic block.
My other shield idea was actually more concerned with stats
and effects. It's called the Toad Belly shield, and it has a
belly-up toad on the front of it, to signify softness. Like any
sword would cut through it like a hot knife through butter. So
it has 50% block across the board, but the hidden effect is
that enemy attacks don't repel against it, so you'll be able to
get counter damage easily, since their attack animations
won't end abruptly when you block them. I want to do it, but
I think people will dislike it even more because the concept is
so self-depreciating.
Incorrect, the answer is 100 physical, lightening, fire, and

magic block.
As far as the toad shield, it sounds like it'd be an
awesome concept. But would the enemy's attack clip
through your character model when striking through this
frog shield? Also PvP would be altered pretty radically. Not
that I'm against that, variety is the spice of life.
It already works that way in pvp, there's no deflection

(I don't know the reason). It's only in PvE that attacks
bounce off things. I guess it would work the same way
that it does for pvp, which must mean that it just clips
through you. I'm pretty sure some enemy attacks
don't get deflected anyway, like some of the black and
silver knight's moves.

Perhaps, but Fromsoftware is also incredibly busy creating a game. If they did
assign the curation to the developer instead of public voting, they probably
wouldn't choose the art director to flip through millions of submissions. They
would use an intern or someone with less experience and investment. Would
you really want an intern deciding whether your shield is good enough?
Making art is half the struggle. Getting it sold is the other half. If you want to
expose your shield to as many possible votes as possible, that's your
responsibility.
There aren't that many submissions. A few hundred, not millions. I just
think the contest has been poorly handled. I like how the japan contest is
set up. It's just an objectively fairer system.

Well, Fromsoftware makes some mistakes but they make up for with
the final product. ;)

From didn't make the mistake, they handled it well I said. Japan contest
is handled by them, because they self-publish in Japan. It's Namco's
handling that is lacking.

Fun fact: The design on the Black Iron shield was the one that a unit in Dagorhir
(Gestiguise) has been using for over thirteen years. It's always funny when new
guys accuse them of ripping the icon off, when they were the ones that submitted

Yes, please generalize everyone submitting a design as a "retard." Artists are a

little crazy, but I don't know if retard is the right word. I doubt you would call
some of these shields works of art, but that's a matter of taste. You're obviously
going to get a wide range of quality when you open up on a contest to so many
people. Some you will like and some you won't.
Perhaps you should ask yourself why Fromsoftware did this contest in the first
place. They wanted to get fans involved and excited about Dark Souls II
development while they (patiently) waited for its release. Fromsoftware is
adapting to create games that appeal to a larger audience than the typical
Japanese RPG. They appreciate the support their fans have shown them and are
"returning the favor" by offering even more chances for community involvement
in Dark Souls II.
pretty frustrating that the top voted entire are large shields, I mean yeah it gives
you more space to design but usability in game is going to be pretty limited. i
don't think i've ever seriously equipped a large shield. parry much?

I used large shields in Dark Souls. I'm sure the general consensus is that
parrying is a more useful ability than sheer blocking power, but sometimes it's
fun to try different playstyles. It feels kind of good when you can absorb the
big hits like a champ instead of needing to parry them.
I'm actually hoping that they do something to make large shields more useful
in DS II, because I really like playing with them on STR based characters.
I always thought a cool idea could be that only large shields can "parry" large
weapons. It wouldn't be a regular parry animation, of course, it would be
more like a counter-bash with the shield that deflects the weapon swing. I
mean, it's kind of silly that a tiny little shield in Dark Souls can parry the
Demon's Great Hammer and other ridiculously large weapons.

Luckily the "winners" of the contest don't matter as much as the entries. I'm sure
From might give extra weight to those shields that both meet their criteria and
are highly thought of by the public, but I'd bet that they would delve far into the
list to find something especially fitting or neat.

How exactly do you design the shield? I've got the template, now what?
use your software of choice. I'm modeling them in blender > materials >
render and going the whole 9 yards for realism. However most people will just
use Photoshop and hand paint their own textures / designs.
I suppose you could even hand draw it and scan it onto the template

but I don't feel like the colour schemes are very Dark Souls-y
