L124 Litesse Nutrition Data and Labelling - EU Only
DuPont Nutrition & Health polydextrose marketed under the name Litesse® complies with this
definition. In this Directive, the energy conversion factor (ENF) for all dietary fibres has been
set at 2kcal/g.
It is therefore DuPont Nutrition & Health understanding that when used for the
nutritional purpose of fibre enrichment, the polydextrose ENF should be considered at
2kcal/g.
In this case polydextrose should also be labeled as a food ingredient, meaning that it
may then be labeled in the ingredient list as “polydextrose” or “polydextrose (dietary
fibre)” or equivalent wording.
The applicable nutritional composition (per 100g of Litesse®) for calculation of the nutrition
panel would therefore be as follows:

When Litesse® is used as a food additive (e.g. bulking agent)
Polydextrose has also been approved as a food additive in the EU since 1995, under the
auspices of the Miscellaneous Additives Directive (Directive 95/2/EC(4), most recently
replaced by Regulation 1333/2008(5)) . Here it is recognised for its technological qualities, in
particular as a low-calorie “bulking agent”, and was granted the E1200 food additive code.
DuPont Nutrition & Health has formal statements from the UK and French governments
specifying an energy conversion factor (ENF) of 1 kcal/g for polydextrose, and these have not
been rescinded. Elsewhere, based on best scientific practice, it has been custom and practice
to label products based on an ENF for polydextrose of 1 kcal/g. No Authority has requested
withdrawal of any of the many hundreds of products currently on the market in Europe using
an ENF of 1 kcal/g for polydextrose.
Therefore, DuPont Nutrition & Health consider it appropriate to continue to account for
the ENF of polydextrose at 1 kcal/g in applications where it is specifically used for its
technological purposes, and where no fibre content is claimed.
The applicable nutritional composition (per 100g of Litesse®) for calculation of the nutrition
panel would therefore be as follows:

(2)When used as a dietary fibre, the largest proportion of polydextrose should be listed under the fibre content
(see (3) below). The remaining part, excluding water, should be listed under “Carbohydrates”. Conversely, when
used as a bulking agent, polydextrose should be listed under “Total Carbohydrates”, which includes sugars,
polyols and other carbohydrates which are unavailable (chemically carbohydrate in nature, but which are not
metabolised in humans and are not considered to be sugars according to definitions within the EU). The definition
and purity of polydextrose is controlled in the EU by (EC) Regulation 231/2012.
(3) According to EU fibre definition per Commission Directive 2008/100/EC as measured by AOAC 2009.01 (still
under development).
