JMS 1 : TUTORIAL 4

1. Documentaries are non fictional motion pictures which are intended to do documents some
aspects of the truth or maintaining historical record . Aurderheide meaning of documentary is
a storyteller about real life with claims to truthfulness and the regular movie is also real but it
is precisely the problem.

2. The documentary has a role in a democratic society. The role of documentary in society is
to give important information about the province they might expose ,for example in the
documentary Dr Kunju was the presenter of the film and he was giving the Eastern Cape
citizens important historical information ,basically the role of documentary in a democratic
society is to bring together people of the society to organise themselves against the
enemies.Documentary is important as the author says that it is an reality that shapes community
because it explains in details places that the intellectual thinkers influenced. The documentary
played an role by educating people about the positive colonisation and also letting people know
about their roots .

3.2 Images played an important role in the intellectual giant documentary .According to the
book they made the book viewers feel like were watching unvarnished reality .It implied
urgency, catching subjects on the fly which led viewers to believe that the subject must be
hiding some thing.

Audio also conveyed a message to the viewers. The music at the back let the sound of the
funeral to dominate the soundtrack that has a meaning .The music at the background was
matching with the representer’s action and the music had some message in it , as it shows a
particular place also the music changes and matches with the atmosphere of the place.

b). The tension that the documentary experienced is how to make the viewers understand the
meaning behind the documentary. The interviews that they had back to back and also tyring to
make them understand their goal. In the documentary there is an tension on the viewers ,they
had to make sure that the capture real things. Dr Kunju in the documentary had to make sure
what he present certifies the viewers so there is an tension on that and also the principles of the
documentary they had to make in time.
