Our training partners offer backhoe
operator training courses for complete
novices, 360 operators looking to convert
or employers looking to upskill their team.
Each one covers the essentials needed to
take control of the machine - explaining
everything from the basics of how a
backhoe loader works to specialist and
sector-specific skills.
Once the course is completed, participants
will have more than a qualification. They’ll
have access to more opportunities, greater
earning potential and new prospects for
their career in construction.
A backhoe loader is one of the most
versatile machines in construction,
capable of handling a range of loading,
roading and excavation tasks.
It combines the features of an 8T excavator
and a front loader giving operators the ability
to lift, level, doze, compact, break, grab,
grade and sweep. And thanks to its wheels,
it can also easily travel to different locations.
With these multiple capabilities, it’s used
across a wide variety of residential and
commercial projects.

BACKHOE LOADER CAREER OPTIONS

There are a few routes to take when considering a career as a backhoe operator,
here are three options popular options you may want to explore.

Based on your individual preferences, find the one that is right for you.

Option 1:
Self-employed as owner operator
Purchase a backhoe and hire yourself
and the machine out on jobs or on
contract work.

Option 2:
Self-employed operator working
for a contractor
Operate a backhoe for a company
for an hourly rate.

Option 3:
Employment as an operator
for a building company
Operate a backhoe and receive a salary
in addition to company benefits.

The next three pages will outline three different training options for you to consider
based on your current experience and needs.

 NOVICE COURSE AT LOCAL TRAINING CENTRE

OVERVIEW
A beginners entry level course for a new operator with no previous experience
operating a Backhoe Loader. Upon completion of the course, the candidate will
be able to operate 180˚ excavator safely and productively with an understanding
of the capabilities, purposes and limitations of the machine.

DURATION LOCATIONS
Recommended 2-week duration Nationwide location available – see page 7.
for complete novice.

COST/FUNDING
The average course costs £2,000 per
candidate. (price may vary depending
on location).
The CITB Levy Grant is available
meaning levy payers could claim
back up to £710 per candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS
CPCS or NPORS Trained
Operator (Red Card).

360 180 CONVERSION COURSE

OVERVIEW
The 360 to 180 conversion course is suitable for experienced 360 operators looking to
upskill and add 180 excavator to their jobs card. The Backhoe Loader and Excavator
share the NVQ category on the CPCS Competent Operator (blue) card. This means
that an individual who already holds a Blue Card for 360 would go straight to blue
card on 180 upon passing the training and test.

DURATION COST/FUNDING
3 – 5 days. The average course costs £1,000 per
candidate.(price may vary depending
on location).
CITB Levy Grant available to claim back
up to £710 per candidate for levy payers.

Competent Operator

 BACKHOE LOADER SKILLS BOOTCAMP

OVERVIEW
This government funded programme is an excellent opportunity for employers
to upskill their employees and incorporate more trained 180 operators into their
workforce. Depending on candidate experience the 2 week programme can either be
dedicated to solely Backhoe training, or can be combined with another plant category.

DURATION NOTE: 360 blue card holders

will go straight to 180 blue
10 day / 2 week programme. due to shared NVQ category.

COST/FUNDING For more experienced candidates, the

Skills Bootcamps are a government
funded initiative.
For upskilling existing employees,
the employer is required to make a
contribution as follows;
• SME – 10% contribution (approx. £300)
• LE – 30% contribution (approx. £1,000)
• Self-employed – fully funded
QUALIFICATIONS
CPCS 180 Excavator Trained Operator
Card on completion.
180 training can be combined to include
another CPCS plant category within the
2-week programme e.g. 360, Telehandler
or Dumper.
