Homework 6
Problem 1
The purpose of this problem is to investigate the effect of axial force on plastic moment
capacity of an elasto-plastic cross-section. To this end you are supposed to extent your
script/program written in previous homework (Homework # 5) so that you take into
account a tensile axial force. In other words, the rectangular section is not under pure
bending state but the stress resultant yields an axial force and a bending moment.
The squash load for the rectangular cross-section is Np = σy × b × h. Considering a set
of axial forces starting from
calculate the corresponding plastic moment capacity and obtain the following M-N
interaction diagram. Please realize that the values on the x-axis are divided by Mp =
b × d2 × σy /4 and the values on the y-axis are divided by Np = σy × b × h.
