What is Inorganic
Compounds?
Inorganic compounds are derived

Inorganic from nonliving components, and

generally have ionic bonds, lack

Compounds
carbon-hydrogen bonds, and rarely,
if ever, contain any carbon atoms.
Let's get
started
Water
- Water is a vital inorganic compound that is essential for
all living organisms.
- It is a polar molecule with a bent shape, allowing it to
form hydrogen bonds with other molecules.
- Water is known as the universal solvent due to its
ability to dissolve a wide range of substances.
- It also exhibits high surface tension, cohesion, and
adhesion properties.
Acids
- Acids are inorganic compounds that release hydrogen
ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
- They have a pH level below 7 and can react with bases
to form salts and water.
- Common examples of acids include hydrochloric acid
(HCl), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and citric acid.
- Acids are used in various industries, such as food
preservation, cleaning products, and the production of
fertilizers.
Bases
- Bases are inorganic compounds that release hydroxide
ions (OH-) when dissolved in water.
- They have a pH level above 7 and can neutralize acids
to form salts and water.
- Examples of bases include sodium hydroxide (NaOH),
potassium hydroxide (KOH), and ammonia (NH3).
- Bases are commonly used in household cleaning
products, as well as in the manufacturing of soaps and
detergents.
Properties
of Acids and
Bases Acids taste sour, turn blue litmus paper red, and
have a corrosive effect on metals.
Bases taste bitter, feel slippery, turn red litmus
paper blue, and are commonly used in antacids to
neutralize stomach acids.
The strength of an acid or base is measured on the
pH scale, ranging from 0 to 14.
Importance
of Inorganic
Compounds Water is essential for hydration, transportation of
nutrients, and regulation of body temperature.
Acids and bases play crucial roles in various
chemical reactions, industrial processes, and
biological functions.
Understanding the properties and behavior of
inorganic compounds is essential for a deeper
comprehension of chemistry and its applications.
