CLAMPING SYSTEM DESIGN - TOP YOKE BEAM SCREEN - LIFTING LUG

COMPONENT

This group box contains the inputs for the lifting lugs. These lugs are
used to lift the active part on shop floor.

The dimensions calculated by the clamping system module are based

on the total weight of the active part and considering the maximal
allowed angle of 60º between lifting ropes. The validation is done
considering the real lifting angle as defined by the entered Lifting
Ropes Minimal Length.

This group box with inputs for the lifting lugs is only visible when
Lifting Lugs are choosen for Yoke beam lifting type top in the General
Input screen of the Pre-Design Wizard.

INPUTS

MANUAL OVERRIDE

 : If manual override is cleared, the clamping system module will try to define a proper value for the
inputs for the given lifting lug when Calculate MDS-A Design is clicked in the Clamping system ribbon.
Calculation will be done based upon the maximal allowed lifting angle of 60º between lifting ropes and
the table of standard lifting lug sizes as given in UDM.04.04.08.111 Lifting Lugs. Validation will also be
done and displayed in the user interface when Validate MDS-A Design is clicked in the Clamping
System ribbon.
 : If manual override is checked, the clamping system module will not change the inputs for the given
lifting lug. When Calculate MDS-A Design or Validate MDS-A Design are clicked in the Clamping
System ribbon, only the validation will be performed for the inputs of the given lifting lug.

HEIGHT OF LUG

Clamping System Design - Top Yoke Beam Screen - Lifting Lug Page 2 of 5

The height of the lifting lug,

from bottom edge up till the
upper edge of the lug.

LENGTH OF LUG

The longest dimension of the

lifting lug in longitudinal
direction of the transformer.

THICKNESS OF LUG

Thickness of the sheet that is

used to create the lifting lug.
This is also the longest
dimension of the lug in lateral
direction of the transformer.

DIAMETER OF HOLE IN LUG

Diameter of the hole made in

the lug that will be used to
attach a lifting shackle while
lifting.

DEPTH IN YOKE BEAM

The lifting lug is welded

against the yoke beam. To
ensure that this connection is
strong enough, a rectangular
slot is cut out of the yoke
beam plate. The lifting lug is
then inserted into this slot
before welding. This dimension
captures the vertical dimension
of this slot.

A higher value will increase the

depth of the slot in the yoke
beam and lower the position

of the lifting lug. The strength

of the connection between lug
and yoke beam will increase.

A lower value will decrease the

depth of the slot in the yoke
beam and incerase the
position of the lifting lug. The
strength of the connection
between lug abd yoke beam
will decrease.

WELD SIZE FILLET

A measurement of the weld

made between the lifting lug
and the yoke beam at the
outer side of lug and yoke
beam. Outer side means the
side furthest away to the core.
The thickness of the lug is in
most cases larger than the
thickness of the yoke beam. In
such case a fillet weld must be
used to join both together at
the outside.

WELD SIZE GROOVE

A measurement of the weld

made between the lifting lug
and the yoke beam at the
inner side of lug and yoke
beam. Inner side means the
side closest to the core.
At the inner side, the yoke
beam is pressed against the
flat surface of the core. To
prevent the lifting lug from
interfering, the inner surface of
the lug must be welded flush
with the inner surface of the
yoke beam. This leaves only
the option of groove welds to
join lifting lug and yoke beam
together.

4 LUG CAPACITY

The capacity gives the maximal allowed weight that can be lifted while using 4 of the indicated lugs together.
This capacity is defined taking in account the worst case situation of lifting with 4 slings with a maximal angle
between 2 slings of 60º. This value is given for informational purposes only and can not be changed by the
user. A higher load can be allowed on a given lug if more favorable worst case lifting conditions are specified
in the lifting instructions for the transformer.

This field will only give reliable information for the predefined standard lifting shackles. This field will therefore
only be visible when Manual override is not checked.

CONSIDERED ACTIVE PART WEIGHT

This input gives the active part weight without safety factors that is considered to select and check the lifting
lugs for mechanical strength.

CAPACITY OF SELECTED SHACKLE

The capacity of one single shackle that is used during the validation of the lifting lug. The transformer must be
lifted with these shackles.
