DEMO SYNOPSIS

PROSTHODONTICS
Complete Denture

Impression techniques:
1. Mucostatic or Passive : (proposed by Richardson and later
popularized by Henry Page)
ü The impression is made mainly by oral mucos membrane and the
jaws in a normal and relaxed condition
ü Border moulding is not done here.
ü The Impression is made with an oversized tray.
ü Closely adapted to the mucosa of the denture-bearing area but has
poor peripheral seal.
ü Uses - sharp, thin, flat and flabby ridges,
ü Retention is mainly due to interfacial surface tension
ü Denture has good stability but poor retention
ü Material- impression plaster.

2. Mucocompressive Impression (Carole Jones)

ü Records the oral tissues in a functional and displaced form.
ü Material-Impression compound & waxes.
ü Soft tissue is resilient thus tends to retern to anatomical position
once forces are relieved. Therefore, dentures get displaced due to
tissue rebound at rest.
ü The constant pressure exerted onto the soft tissues limit the blood
circulation leading to residual ridge resorption.

3. Selective Pressure Impression (Boucher)

ü The selective pressure technique makes it possible to confine the
forces acting on the denture to the stress-bearing areas. This is
achieved through the design of the special tray in which the non-
stress-bearing areas are relieved and the stress-bearing areas are
allowed to come in contact with the tray.

Techniques for recording PPS

1. Conventional approach:- It is not physiologic technique and
therefore depends upon accurate transfer of the vibrating lines and
careful scraping of the cast.
2. Fluid wax technique:- it is physiologic technique. Increased
retention of trial base and convenience in jaw relation. Over
compression is avoided. But more time is required and difficulty
may be experienced in handling the materials.
