Experiment 8

NAME: JOSHI JATIN. N

ROLL NO: 21BCH119D

SUB: PIPING DESIGN LAB

QUESTION: A tank having a volume of 15 m3 is to be filled with water from a nearby pond
which is located at a height of 40 m and is 50 m away. The pond can hold 250 m3 of water at
a time. The water is taken from a depth of 0.5 m at a rate of 20 kilograms per hour. The
pipes used are made of 1inch sch 160 PVC. The pump pressurises the water to 5 bar and has
an efficiency of 25%.

(A)Find the pressure and temperature profiles of the pipe segment/s?

(B)What should be the minimum outlet pressure of the pump if efficiency is increased, and
when the pipe diameter is reduced?

(C)Comment in the increase or decrease in the residence time of the tank with increase in
efficiency of the pump.

FLOWSHEET:
FIND THE PRESSURE AND TEMPERTURE PROFILE OF PIPE-2:

CHANGE IN OUTLET PRESSURE if PIPE-2 DIAMETER IS REDUCED:

PDROP Old: 4.865 bar

PDROP New @ decreased diameter : 3.90

CHANGE IN RESIDENCE TIME OF THE TANK IF WE CHANGE THE EFFCIENCY OF THE SYSTEM:

Conclusion:

This problem involves fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, and pump efficiency considerations in
transferring water from a pond to a tank. By analyzing pressure and temperature profiles, as well as
considering changes in pump efficiency and pipe diameter, we can optimize the pumping system for
efficient water transfer. Additionally, increasing the pump efficiency can decrease the residence time
of the tank, leading to faster tank filling.

RESULT:

Pressure drop old: 4.90

Pressure drop new@ decreased in diameter: 3.90
