Starter – Recap ionization energy

• What can you remember about ionization energy?
• What factors affect the value of the ionization energy?

• Ionisation energy is the energy needed to remove 1 mol of e-

from 1 mol of atoms to form 1 mol of +1 ions in the gaseous state
• Atomic radius and electron-electron repulsion and shielding
both outweigh extra nuclear charge down the group

Ionisaton trends down group 2

• Ionisation energy decreases
down group 2 as the atomic
radius increases
• There is less force of attraction
on the outer valence e- from the
nucleus due to the extra inner
shells causing e- - e- repulsion or
shielding
• So its easier to ionize and Both atomic radius and shielding outweigh
extra nuclear charge down the group
remove e-
All will be able describe trends in ionization
SCF Competency - Communication energy and reactivity down group 2 7

Trends in reactivity of group 2

• Reactivity increases down group 2
• This is directly linked to ionisaiton energy decreasing, resulting
in easier removal of e-
• In Be, the outer e- are in 2s2, which is very close to the nucleus
• Thus, a stronger force of attraction due to a smaller atomic
radius and limited e- - e- repulsion/shielding
• The opposite is true for Ba at the bottom of the group; huge
atomic radius, lots of shielding, lower IE so easier to remove e-
All will be able describe trends in ionization

Plenary - Answer question 1 page 93

• 1st IE Be = Be(g)  Be+1(g) + 1 e-
• 2nd IE Ba = Ba+1(g)  Ba+2(g) + 1 e-

All will be able to write equations

SCF Competency - Communication for 1st and 2nd ionization energy 9

Exam plenary question

• Energy is not released, its required to pull away 1 e-
