Reading: Read an unseen comprehension passage and answer questions with
varying degrees of challenge.
Identify the purpose and/or main idea of the text
Answer inferential questions based on the given text
Identify meaning by predicting words and phrases in the given text
Identify author’s use of devices to portray ideas and thoughts
Connect the topic in the given text to personal thoughts/ opinions/ experiences
Differentiate between facts, opinions, beliefs and assumptions
Identify grammatical components in the given text (mentioned in the writing section)
Find a suitable replacement for grammatical components (eg; synonyms, adjectives,
words with a positive or a negative connotation or colloquial vs formal written language
etc.)

Writing: Writing for different purposes:


Story/ narrative/ recount (serious/humorous), Descriptive writing, Informative writing
(news report)
Informal/formal Letter (including letter of complaint, formal application letter)
Argumentative/Persuasive writing (essay, poster, advertisement or a persuasive, charity
appeal letter)
As per the purpose of writing, use the following grammatical components where
required:
different types of sentences, such as question, exclamation, statement, conditional
direct/indirect speech, present, past and/or future tense
time and sequence vocabulary for cohesion and coherence (first, after that, in the end
etc.)
phrasal verbs, uncommon prefixes, collocations
write using complex punctuation (full stop, comma, colon, semi colon, question mark,
exclamation mark, speech/quotation marks, dash, hyphen, parenthesis and
apostrophes)
As per the purpose of writing, express the following where required:
