P1. If S = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9}, A = {0, 2, 4, 6, 8}, B = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}, C = {2, 3, 4, 5}, and D = {1, 6, 7}, list
the elements of the sets corresponding to the following events:
(a) A ∪ D;
(b) A ∩ B;
(c) B’;
(d) (B’ ∩ D) ∪ A;
(e) (S ∩ D)’;
(f) A ∩ C ∩ D’.

P2. In how many different ways can a true-false test consis�ng of 10 ques�ons be answered?

P3. In a high school gradua�ng class of 100 students, 54 studied mathema�cs, 69 studied history, and
35 studied both mathema�cs and history. If one of these students is selected at random, find the
probability that:
(a) the student took mathema�cs or history;
(b) the student did not take either of these subjects;
(c) the student took history but not mathema�cs.

(a) the dic�onary is selected?
(b) 2 novels and 1 book of poems are selected?

P2. An allergist claims that 50% of the pa�ents she tests are allergic to some type of weed. What is
the probability that
(a) exactly 3 of her next 4 pa�ents are allergic to weeds?
(b) none of her next 4 pa�ents is allergic to weeds?
P3. Interest centers around the life of an electronic component. Suppose it is known that the probability
that the component survives for more than 6000 hours is 0.42. Suppose also that the probability that
the component survives no longer than 4000 hours is 0.04.
(a) What is the probability that the life of the component is less than or equal to 6000 hours?
(b) What is the probability that the life is greater than 4000 hours?

P4. Consider the situa�on of problem P3. Let A be the event that the component fails a par�cular test
and B be the event that the component displays strain but does not actually fail. Event A occurs with
probability 0.20, and event B occurs with probability 0.35.
(a) What is the probability that the component does not fail the test?
(b) What is the probability that the component works perfectly well (i.e., neither displays strain nor fails
the test)?
(c) What is the probability that the component either fails or shows strain in the test?

P1. Police plan to enforce speed limits by using radar traps at four different loca�ons within the city
limits. The radar traps at each of the loca�ons L1 , L2 , L3 , and L4 will be operated 40%, 30%, 20%, and
30% of the �me. If a person who is speeding on her way to work has probabili�es of 0.2, 0.1, 0.5, and
0.2, respec�vely, of passing through these loca�ons, what is the probability that she will receive a
speeding �cket?

P2. A construc�on firm purchased 3 tractors from a certain company. At the end of the 5th year, let E1, E2,
and E3 denote respec�vely the events that tractors 1, 2, and 3are s�ll in good opera�onal condi�on.

(a) Denote the following events (A, B, and C below) in terms of E1, E2, and E3, and their respec�ve
complements:
A = only tractor no. 1 is in good condi�on at the end of 5th year
B = exactly one tractor is in good condi�on at the end of 5th year
C = at least one tractor is in good condi�on
(b) Past experience indicates that the chance of a given tractor manufactured by this company
having a useful life longer than 5 years (i.e., in good opera�onal condi�on at the end of the 5th
year) is 60%. If one of the tractors need to be replaced (not in good opera�onal condi�on at the
end of the 5th year), the probability of replacement of one of the other two tractors is 60%; if
two tractors need to be replaced, the probability of replacement of the remaining one is 80%.

P1. An examina�on of the 10-year record of rainy days for a municipality reveals the following:
1. 30% of the days are rainy days
2. There is a 50% chance that a rainy day will be followed by another rainy day
3. There is a 20% chance that two consecu�ve rainy days will be followed by a third rainy
day
A house is scheduled for roof pain�ng star�ng next Monday for a period of three consecu�ve
days.
(a) Let M = Monday is a rainy day
T = Tuesday is a rainy day
W = Wednesday is a rainy day
Express the following percentages (30%, 50%, and 20%) in the above-men�oned results of the
analysis of the 10-year rainfall record in terms of the events M, T, and/or W. For example, the answer for
the first result (result 1: 30% of the days are rainy days) is P(M) = P(T) = P(W) = 30%.
(b) What is the probability that it will rain on both Monday and Tuesday?
(c) What is the probability that Wednesday will be the only dry day during the pain�ng period?
(d) What is the probability that there will be at least one rainy day during the 3-day pain�ng
period?

P2. A city commuter can take one of the three possible routes A, B, or C to work. On a given workday
morning, during rush hours, the chances that routes A, B, and C will have traffic conges�on, H, are,
respec�vely 60%, 60%, and 40%. Routes A and B are close by each other such that if traffic is congested
in one route the chance of conges�on in the other increases to 85%, while the condi�on in route C is
unaffected (i.e., independent) by the traffic condi�ons in routes A and B. Also, if the traffic in all the
three routes are congested, the chance that the commuter will be late , L, for work is 90%, otherwise it
will be 30%.
• What is the probability that exactly one of the three routes will be congested on a
weekday morning?
• What is the probability that the commuter will be late for work on a given workday
morning?
• If it is known that the traffic in route A is congested, how would this fact change the
probability in (b)?
