CLASS 12 - MATHEMATICS

Time Allowed: 90 mins Maximum Marks : 30

General Instructions:
All questions are compulsory.
Writing should be neat and clean.

Section A

1 If A is a square matrix, then A – A’ is a [1]

a) symmetric matrix
b) Antisymmetric matrix
c) skew - symmetric matrix
d) diagonal matrix

2 [1]
If A =[ ] is a symmetric matrix, then the value of x + y + z is:

a) 6
b) 8
c) 0
d) 10

3 Number of symmetric matrices of order 3 3 with each entry 1 or - 1 is [1]

a) 64
b) 512
c) 4
d) 8

4 If A =[ ] and (3I + 4A) (3I - 4A) = x I, then the value(s) x is/are: [1]

a) 0

b) √

6 If A =| | then find A . [1]

a) | |

b) | |

c) | |

d) | |

7 Let A be a 3 3 square matrix such that A (adj A) = 2I, where I is the identity matrix. The [1]
value of |adj A| is
a) 2
b) 4
c) - 4
d) 0

8 [1]
There are two values of such that | | = - 16 then the sum of two values of is

a) 0
b) 5
c) 6
d) 3

9 Let A and B be two invertible matrices of order 3 3. If det (ABA’) = 8 and det (AB )= [1]
8, then det (BA B’) is equal to
a) 16

b)
c) 1

d)

10 Assertion (A): If the order of A is 3 4, and order of B is 3 4 and the order of C is 5 [1]
4, then the order of ( ) is 4 5.

Reason (R) : The multiply an m n matrix by n p matrix then n must be the same and
result is an m p matrix. Also, A be a matrix of order m n then the order of transpose
matrix is n m.
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true.

11 Assertion (A): If A = | | , then the matrix A is singular if x = 3. [1]

Reason (R): A square matrix is a singular matrix if its determinant is zero.

a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
c) A is true but R is false.
d) A is false but R is true.
Section B

12 Construct a 3 4 matrix, whose elements are given by a = 2i - j [2]

13 [2]
Section C

14 [3]

15 Find the value of k for which the points A(1, - 1), B(2, k) and C(4, 5) are collinear. [3]
Section D (CASE STUDY)

16 Read the text carefully and answer the questions: A trust fund has 35000 that must [4]
be invested in two different types of bonds, say X and Y. The first bond pays 10%
interest p.a. which will be given to an old age home and second one pays 8% interest p.a.
which will be given to WWA (Women Welfare Association). Let A be a 1 2 matrix and
B be a 2 1 matrix, representing the investment and interest rate on each bond
respectively.
1. Represent the given information in matrix algebra.
2. If 15000 is invested in bond X, then findtotal amount of interest received on both
bonds?
3. If the trust fund obtains an annual total interest of 3200, then find the
investment in two bonds.
4. If the amount of interest given to old age home is 500, then find the amount of
investment in bond Y.
Section E

17 [5]
If [ ] , find A . Using A solve the system of equations

2x - 3y + 5z = 11; 3x + 2y - 4z = - 5; x + y - 2z = - 3
