Long Quiz
I. BINARY TYPE. WRITE TRUE IF THE STATEMENT IS CORRECT, OTHERWISE, WRITE FALSE.
2. Descriptive statistics enables us to make estimates of population values called parameters and to
make statements about computed statistics acceptable to some degree of confidence
3. Hypothesis testing evaluates a conjecture about some characteristic of the parent population based
upon the information contained in the random sample.
5. When the direction of the test is left-tailed, we use the symbol less than “<” in stating the alternative
hypothesis.
6. One sample test is used when the mean of one sample is compared to some known or estimated
population means.
7. Independent-sample t-test is used when the means of the two independent groups are compared on
a continuous dependent variable of interest.
8. If both types are possible, probability sampling will give less accurate results than non-probability
sampling.
9. A sample of 10,000 poor Filipinos in Metro Manila was selected to find out if they favor presidential
candidate X. 70% of those in the sample said they favor X, so we can assume that majority of all poor
Filipinos in Metro Manila favor candidate X.
10. The average GWA taken from the whole population of CABEIHM students last semester is 2.05, this
figure is called a statistic.
II. DO AS INDICATED.
1. See the table below. Classify the variables as qualitative or quantitative. If quantitative, classify as
discrete or continuous. (5pts)
2. See the table below. Write ratio, interval, ordinal, or nominal depending on the highest level of
measurement of the variables. Write your answer in the spaces below. (5pts)
VARIABLES
c. Student classification
d. number of enrolled subjects
3. A vending machine in BSU canteen is used to dispense 8 ounces of a cup-full of soft drinks. Suppose
that the machine is tested 25 times which yields an average fill of 8.5 ounces per cup with a standard
deviation of 0.64 ounces per cup. Assume that the cup-full of soft drinks follows a normal distribution. Is
there evidence to say that the machine is overfilling at a 1% level of significance?
4. A study was conducted to compare the length of time it took male and female students from the
same year level and college to answer a 50-item IQ test. Independent samples of 50 male students and
50 female students were asked to take the test in which each person was timed. The results were as
follows:
Male 50 42 18
Female 50 38 14
Did the data present sufficient evidence to suggest a difference between the true mean completion
times of male and female students at the 5% level of significance?
