Lecture 380-22-201 Gain Margin and Phase Margin Bode
In this Lecture:
Gain Margin And Phase Margin
Relative stability
The gain margin (GM) is the distance on the bode magnitude plot from
the amplitude at the phase crossover frequency up to the 0 dB point.
GM=-(dB of G measured at the phase crossover frequency)
Phase Margin (PM): is defined as the change in open loop phase shift
required to make a closed loop system unstable.
The phase margin (PM) is the distance from -180 up to the phase at
the gain crossover frequency. PM=180+phase of GH measured at
the gain crossover frequency

Determining Phase and Gain Margins
Procedure: 1) Draw vertical lines through 0 dB on gain and -180 on phase plots.
2) Draw horizontal lines through 0 dB and -180 so that they intersect with the vertical lines.
3.) Draw two more horizontal lines that intersect the -180 line on the gain plot and the 0 dB line
on the phase plot.
