The Generalized Nyquist Path in the s-Plane
Some Concepts Related to Poles and Zeros

For a function F(s) with a variable of s,

the poles of F(s) are the values of s such that F(s) = ∞ ; and the
zeros of F(s) are the values of s such that F(s) = 0

𝐺(𝑠)
𝑇(𝑠) =
1 + 𝐺 𝑠 𝐻(𝑠)

we have following relationships:

The Nyquist Criterion F(s)= 1 + L(s)
Alternatively F`(s) = F(s)-1 = L(s) = G(s)H(s)

Please note that

Procedure for Determining Stability using Nyquist Stability Criterion

 Draw the Nyquist Plot

 From the open-loop transfer function, find the number of open-loop poles inside Nyquist contour
 Determine the clockwise encirclement N of the -1 Point
 Determine Z= N+P
 Stable if Z=0
