These two infographic resumes were designed very differently from one another. Firstly, you can
clearly see that resume A is primarily text based with icons incorporated to designate the type of
information the person in conveying, while resume B’s design includes custom pictures and icons and
is organized with design principles in mind.

I have a hard time following the text in resume A as I cannot define a clear layout and I cannot
differentiate between the different information blocks whilst in resume B I can see it was designed
with a clear layout in mind making it more organized and able to sustain my interest.

Resume A uses an off-black font colour with no other colour except of the white from the empty
space. which makes it look drab and bleak projecting a feeling like this person is not really that
interested in telling me about themself but in resume B, its primary colour is yellow and it projects
an idea that this person applying has a joyful energy making the resume itself look more exciting to
read.

Resume A uses a variety of icons to convey different messages. She uses more detailed icons to show
the skills she has, she used simple icons to convey her journey through education and employment,
with repeating icons to signify employment history. She uses the same commercial icons for the
software she is proficient in to provide relevance to an employer who uses said software. Resume B
only has icons to designate an information block, with them being the same colour as the rest of the
font and infographic, it is not eye catching.

In resume A, it is clearer to see how symmetrical and balanced it is compared to resume B. Resume A
is divided into 4 rectangles and the geometric shapes help to tell a clearer story of the person. While
in resume B, I cannot define any clear shapes of which the information block is in, and because it is
asymmetrical It is harder to follow this person life experiences.

From what I understand about designing is that there are no rules when it comes to designing. With
that said, I also believe that when designing one should at least use the basic principles of design as a
guide. With something such as an infographic resume, which is a design one would use practically
while furthering one’s career, I believe a design for this purpose would benefit more if you applied
the various principles of design while creating your infographic resume.

When searching for what exactly are the principles of design, the sources I have found vary in what
they have listed, from as little as 5 to many as a dozen. Here I will try and give my take on which
principles of design to consider when designing an infographic resume.

Firstly, when designing an infographic, it is wise to employ emphasis or dominance to said design. By
using Emphasis/Dominance, a designer can thwart a person’s natural ability to get distracted by
drawing the reader’s attention to specific elements. In this case, the elements that need emphasis
should be the relevant information that pertain to a person’s education and career history. A
designer can do this by using varying colours and Font size to either place or remove importance on a
piece of information in the infographic.

Together with emphasis/dominance, one should be able to create a sense of balance in their design.
Balance in terms of design refers to the distribution and visual weight of elements in a composition.
(Gaskin, Aug 2022). By making sure not one element does not overpower the overall design, a
designer should be able to create an infographic resume that has a sense of equilibrium thus able to
convey its message better to the intended reader.

Another important design principle to consider while designing an infographic, is repetition. In

design, repetition means reusing elements — colours, patterns, fonts, images, textures and more —
throughout a piece of work. (Gaskin, Sep 2022) This is especially important when creating a design
that would be used in various communications such as business, education, and employment.

By taking advantage of this principle, you use your communications to guide readers, create visual
cohesion and help reinforce other design principles, including hierarchy, unity, and rhythm. (Gaskin,
Sep 2022). A designer would be able to establish a visual hierarchy when using repetition. By using
elements and size in a consistent way, a designer would be able to emphasize or minimize the
information on an infographic.

Also, by applying design elements in a repetitive way, a designer can establish a Pattern or rhythm to
the information they are conveying. An ideal way to create a unified infographic resume is to use
repetition. From how the varying elements look to how they are aligned and communicate with one
another would determine the unity of a design.

Infographic resume 1.

For this design, I only changed the original templates icons and added a few to convey the skills of
our potential employee.

Infographic resume 2.

I decided to remove some of the graphics and added a new one to create a more unique design. I
also adjusted the yellow to be more mellow and less vibrant.

Infographic resume 3.

Elements are the same as infographic resume 2 but I changed the colours to blue. I feel like this looks
more professional compared to the other 3.

Infographic resume 4.

Elements are the same as infographic resume 2 but I changed the colours to red. I feel like this looks
more aggressive and I am not that much of a fan of this colours.
2C.)

Out of the 4 infographic resumes I have designed I have chosen the resume above as my selected
choice.

3.)

For the design of my infographic resume, I have chosen “Anicon Slab” for the person’s name and Job
title she is applying for. I chose a different font for this information to differentiate from the other
text to create emphasis to make it easier for the employer to go back to this info when they need to
refer to this person by name.

The other text I used in the infographic resume is “Eastman Condensed”. This font is used for the rest
of the text in the infographic. I use different sizes, some to match with the size of an icon, others to
convey relevant information. I used bigger sizes to place emphasis on the information or the type of
information.

I found some cultural patterns related to India and used them for the corners. I replaced it with the
one given in the default template to create something more unique. For the Icons, I used basic icons
in order to convey basic data such as her contact information. I used slightly more complex icons for
others such as skills and software skills, I feel it will break the information apart and make it easier
for the reader to find the information they need about the potential employee.

I used design principles as a guide while creating my infographic resume. I used different fonts and
font sizes to convey or minimize emphasis on the information I feel is more relevant. I used a variety
of icons in order to direct interest to the different information about the potential employee.

I use repeated colours and shapes to create to create a sense of unity in the infographic. Making it
easier to follow and able to convey the information it needs to.
