Abstraction

Explore Abstraction objective

1. Deals with abstraction through
simplification,
2. examines abstraction through repetition,
3. addresses abstraction using line and
shape,
4. explores abstraction using a
combination of object and type.

Before abstraction

 Gathering different resources

 Loni Diep’s Process

 Most students begin the process of graphic
translation from a representational drawing that is
simplified and through a series of steps

 “This is the image I originally started out with. So

I had to work backwards in the translation, which
seemed pointless at first. But it helped me see
flaws in individual components of the drawing.
Also, it helped by producing elements in the
beginning simple steps that worked with later final
steps.”

1- Abstraction Through Simplification

 you will use drawing to evaluate and
understand the visual aspects of the object.

 Use basic drawing and observation skills, and

then uses the concepts of simplification,

 You will use these concepts through cropping,

scaling, repetition, using line to imply shape, and
combining shapes into a unified whole.

 design where the parts of the object

are important to its identification.

121

ABSTRACTION THROUGH
REPETITION
 focus on how the repetition of all or part
of the object can create new shapes in
both the positive and negative areas.

 because the object will be repeated more

than once within the composition, each
object within the frame may be used to
tell part of the story

 Three examples of logos using line and

shape.

In this composition, your

eye closes off the top of The composition completely
the image and leaves you encloses the shape on the
to imagine the closed area lower right and causes it to
at the lower right look “trapped.”

4- ABSTRACTION USING
TYPE COMBINATION
 For the letterform, use existing typefaces
and avoid distorting the proportions of the
letter.

 You may cover up or delete part of the

letterform, and scale, reposition, and rotate
the forms within the frame.

 Parts of the letterforms can be cropped, but

the letterform should remain identifiable
