 Stammer

Stammer is no handicap.
It is a mode of speech.

Stammer is the silence that falls

between the word and its meaning,
just as lameness is the
silence that falls between
the word and the deed.

Did stammer precede language

or succeed it?
Is it only a dialect or
a language itself?
These questions make
the linguists stammer.

Each time we stammer

we are offering a sacrifice
to the God of meanings.

When a whole people stammer
stammer becomes their mother-tongue:
just as it is with us now.

God too must have stammered

when He created man.
That is why all the words of man
carry different meanings.
That is why everything he utters
from his prayers to his commands
stammers,
like poetry.

口吃不是殘障。
這是一種言說的模式。

口吃是沉默落在
言辭及其含義之間，
正如跛腳是
沉默落在
言辭和行動之間。

口吃在語言之先
還是之後呢？
它本身只是一種方言
還是一門語言？
這些問題令
語言學家口吃。

每次我們口吃
我們正在向
意義之神獻祭。

 Self

My mother didn’t believe

when, in 1945 I appeared to her
in a dream and told her
I would be born to her the following year.

My father recognized me
As soon as he saw
the mole below my left thumb.
But mother believed to the very end
that someone else had been born to her
masquerading as me.

Father and I pleaded with her;

but dreams are not reliable witnesses.
She went on waiting for that
promised son till she died

Only when she was reborn as my daughter

did she admit it had really been me.

But by then I had begun to doubt
it was someone else’s heart
that was beating within my body.

One day I will retrieve my heart;

my language too.

 The Mad

The mad have no caste

nor religion. They transcend
gender, live outside
ideologies. We do not deserve
their innocence.

Their language is not of dreams

but of another reality. Their love
is moonlight. It overflows
on the full moon day.

Looking up they see

gods we have never heard of. They are
shaking their wings when
we fancy they are
shrugging their shoulders. They hold
even flies have souls
and the green god of grasshoppers
leaps up on thin legs.

At times they see trees bleed, hear
lions roaring from the streets. At times
they watch Heaven gleaming
in a kitten’s eyes, just as
we do. But they alone can hear
ants sing in a chorus.

While patting the air

they are taming a cyclone
over the Mediterranean. With
their heavy tread, they stop
a volcano from erupting.

They have another measure

of time. Our century is
their second. Twenty seconds,
and they reach Christ; six more,
they are with the Buddha.

the big bang at the beginning.

They go on walking restless for,

their earth is boiling still.

The mad are not

mad like us.

瘋子沒有種姓
也沒有宗教。他們超越
性別，自外於

他們的清白。

他們來到基督面前 ；再過六秒，
他們和佛陀在一起。

一天之內，他們到達
原初的大爆炸。

To meet my God
I rode a bee’s buzz and
followed the road of the word.
A roaring black tiger kept me company.
That road led me
to death in the battle field.

To meet my God
I got into a dry leaf ’s vein and
followed the road of Silence.
A dumb camel kept me company.
That road led me
to death in the desert.

To meet my God
I mounted a silkworm’s hair and
followed the road of Order.
An army of guards kept me company.
That road led me
to death in the mountain-snow.

I rode a whirlwind’s back and
followed the road of Disorder.
People, scared, gave me way.
That road led me
to death in the deep woods.

To meet my God
I hung on to an eel’s gills and
dived into the mid-sea.
A whale swallowed us and
led us into the netherworld.
From the barred darkness there,
I heard my God cry
guarded by seven god-men
with flaming swords.
I freed him.

Since that day

I have been in Hell,
unable to know who sent me here,
God or the god-men?

我騎著蜜蜂的嗡嗡聲
沿著言辭之路。
一隻咆哮的黑虎作伴。
那條路引領我
在戰場上死亡。

我進入乾葉的葉脈

在沙漠中死亡。

我爬上蠶的一撮毛
遵循秩序之路。

在雪山中死亡。

由七位神人

不知道是受誰派遣，
是神還是神人？

 How to Go to the Tao Temple
(From the sequence, Northern Cantos)

Don’t lock the door.

Go lightly like the leaf in the breeze
along the dawn’s valley.
If you are too fair,
cover yourself with ash.
If too clever, go half-asleep.
That which is fast
will tire fast:
be slow, slow as stillness.

Be formless like water.

Lie low, don’t even try to go up.
Don’t go round the deity:
nothingness has no directions,
no front nor back.
Don’t call it by name,
its name has no name.
No offerings: empty pots
are easier to carry than full ones.
No prayers too: desires
have no place here.

Speak silently, if speak you must:
like the rock speaking to the trees
and leaves to flowers.
Silence is the sweetest of voices
and Nothingness has
the fairest of colours.

Let none see you coming

and none, going.
Cross the threshold shrunken
like one crossing a river in winter.
You have only a moment here
like the melting snow.

No pride: you are not even formed.

No anger: not even dust
is at your command.
No sorrow: it doesn’t alter anything.
Renounce greatness:
there is no other way to be great.
Don’t ever use your hands:

not love, but violence.

Let the fish lie in its water

and the fruit, on its bough.
The soft one shall survive the hard,
like the tongue that survives teeth.
Only the one who does nothing
can do everything.

Go, the unmade idol

不要鎖門。
輕輕離去如微風中的葉子
沿著黎明的山谷。
若你太美麗
便用灰塵掩蓋自己。
若太聰明，便矇矓。
那走得快的
會累得快 ：
走得慢的，慢如止水。

如水無形。
處下，莫圖往上。
莫圍繞神靈 ：
空無無方，
無前亦無後。
莫以名呼喚，
其名無名。
無供奉 ：空罐
比滿罐更易攜帶。
也無祈禱 ：慾望
於此無立足之處。

如石對樹
如葉對花。
沉默是最美妙的聲音
而空無有
最美麗的色彩。

無人見你來
無人見你去。
越過門檻時退縮
就像冬天過河。
你在這裡只有片時
如融雪。

無驕 ：你甚至沒有成形。
無怒 ：甚至灰塵
也不受你的掌握。
無悲：它不改變任何事。
棄偉大 ：
沒有其它方法可以偉大。

 Birds Come after Me

Birds come after me, as if

I were a walking tree.

I spread my crown for them,

like the mushroom in the Russian children’s tale
growing ever wider to shelter
birds and beasts from rain.

I grow many hands,

from the legs for the parrots,
from the hip for crows,
from the belly and the back
for the cranes, eagles,
kingfishers and owls
and tiny twigs for
sparrows and treepies.

They fruit, my head opens out

like a tree top, and bats hang from them
undefined, between bird-ness and beastliness.

My hairs blossom, butterflies looking for honey
surround my head like a halo.

As I watch each bird turns into a letter:

an alphabet of birds.

The wind passes between them,

they make many noises,
order themselves into lines,
resound with suggestions,
change places, combine
to become something else,
sing and tell stories.

Vanished hills and forests

crowd their memory,
dried up pools and streams,
roofs and telephone cables
with screams passing through them
and the scalding grammar
of electric current.

鳥隨著我，彷彿
我是一棵行走的樹。

我為牠們張開樹冠，

There is a dark place between

Seventy and seventy-five: broad
Like memory, deep like death.
Those trapped there have no return.
They roam about in the childhood bushes
Or fall headlong into the well of decrepitude.

Be warned if those between seventy and seventy-five

Behave like the young: for, they are young.
They can love, can dance to music, and if need be
Even lead a war or a revolution. In fact
They are not dead, like most young are.

Those between seventy and seventy-five

May suffer from delusions: at times they want
A horse-ride; at times want to fly above oceans and mountains
On the back of an eagle, wander along deserts
Looking for water that is not there, stand naked
In the rain, or read a poem no one has written yet. There
Are times when they feel history is retracing its step,
And feel like crying aloud, screaming, almost.

The solitude of those between seventy and seventy-five
Is sepia, like some early morning dreams or
Like the friendships in old albums. When they
Laugh, sunlight retreats into village lanes.
Their sweat smells soft like sesame flowers.
Their walk is like the descending scale of saveri 1
And their lilting speech is littered with gamakas 2

You wonder, why, this is all about men. Yes,

Women do not pass at all between
Seventy and seventy-five; invisible to us,
They just glide along on a tender rainbow of affection,
With the soft feet of fairies fragrant like heaven
And the smile of oleanders, an invitation to salvation.

to schools and colleges
