Hello, my name is Josefiina Cirigliano and today im
going to talk about how social media, a factor of globalization, is experienced by the youth. I think that before giving you my point of view, we need to know what globalization is: the word globalization is a term that describes how countries and people from all around the world are becoming more connected and interdependent. It involves the exchange of goods, services, ideas, and information between different countries and cultures. One way to think about globalization is like a big puzzle where each country is a piece, and these pieces are coming together to create a larger, more integrated picture. This can happen through things like international trade, where countries buy and sell products to each other, or through technology, which allows people to communicate and share ideas instantly across borders. Globalization in terms of social media refers to how platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others have made it possible for people from different parts of the world to connect and share information, ideas, and experiences. With social media, individuals can communicate and interact with others globally, regardless of their physical location. They can make friends, follow trends, and learn about different cultures, all through their screens. Social media has made it easier for people to share their thoughts, pictures, videos, and stories with a global audience. Additionally, businesses and organizations can use social media to promote their products and messages to a worldwide audience. This allows companies to expand their reach beyond their local markets and connect with potential customers from around the world. Although social media is one of the most important sources of globalization, it has it’s pros and cons PROS CONS CONNECTIVITY: allows PRIVACY to stay connected with CONCERNS:over friends and family sharing personal worldwide information can lead to privacy breaches EDUCATION: many ADDICTION: excessive educational resources use of social media can are available online contribute to addiction, impacting on well- being. NETWORKING: helps MISS INFORMATION: in building professional young people may be networks providing exposed to miss opportunities for the information or fake future news affecting their understanding Now, i'm going to talk about a case in which social media trends ended up with the life of an Argentinian teenager. Her name was Milagros, she was found dead in her bedroom with an object blocking her throat which didn’t allow her to breath. After some investigation, researchers found out she had been trying to follow a tik tok trend which consisted of no breathing until losing your consciousness. We can say that social media trends have a significant impact on users, influencing their behavior, opinions and emotions. These trend often spread rapidly through platforms captivating the attention of a wide audience. as users see posts related to a particular trend, they may feel like joining it fearing they’ll miss out, leading to a sense of pressure to conform and participate in.
In conclusion, social media, as a factor of
globalization, has undoubtedly transformed the way young people experience the world. It has brought the global community closer together, allowing for connections, information sharing, and opportunities that were previously unimaginable. However, it's important to recognize that this connectivity comes with both advantages and disadvantages. The case of Milagros, the Argentinian teenager who tragically lost her life due to a social media trend, serves as a stark reminder of the impact these platforms can have on individuals. Social media trends can quickly captivate the attention of a wide audience, creating a sense of pressure to conform and participate. As we navigate the world of social media in the context of globalization, it is crucial to be mindful of its effects on our lives. We should use these platforms responsibly, be aware of the risks, and prioritize our well-being and safety while staying connected with the world. Thank you for listening.
