son that little can be said about Joseph with certainty. This is
a portrait, not a biography.1 We are not dealing with a David
or Solomon, both acknowledged by ancient texts, who left
physical remains for archaeologists to argue about, or even a
multilayered biblical account that can be read against itself, as
historians read conÁicting contemporaneous documents. The
Bible’s account of David and Solomon contains histories, coun-
terhistories, a pious retelling in Chronicles, and an awareness
of other sources, now lost, but once available for inspection.

tant Reformers desired. The divide between the Bible and its
commentators and the divide between Jewish and Christian
approaches to Scripture are interrelated. Of the many axioms
of Jewish interpretation, the fundamental dichotomy between
Written Torah and Oral Torah is paramount. Put simply, rab-
binic Judaism did not believe that the revelation God gave Moses
at Mount Sinai exhausted the message of Scripture, which was
to be discovered anew by every generation of interpreters.4 By
contrast, for traditional Christians the single most important
key to unlocking the meaning of the Old Testament was the
New Testament.5 These dichotomies, with all they imply, made
traditional Jewish and Christian exegesis different, despite a
shared veneration of the Scripture.6 Although the isolation of
Jews from non-Jews has often been exaggerated, it remains
true that midrash, Talmud, and the medieval rabbis worked
mainly in Jewish languages, drew mainly from Jewish sources,
and proceeded mainly via Jewish exegetical practices.7
My incorporation of post-Enlightenment, modern readers of
all religious backgrounds requires, therefore, a word of expla-
nation. Today’s mainstream Bible scholars agree that disci-
plinary demands regarding evidence, awareness of one’s own
religious beliefs, and the contested nature of texts and trans-
lations ought to guide one’s scholarly views. A person’s reli-
gious convictions, or lack of same, ought to be bracketed out
when engaging in modern scholarship. My inclusion of non-
Jewish modern commentators derives from the premise that

Redford’s position has been judged extreme, but so has the con-
ception that these events were related to Moses at Sinai about
a Àgure that lived four hundred years earlier. Settling this mat-
ter has not proven critical for Jewish exegetes, who have paid
more heed to the meaning of the past than to its historicity.17
Who wrote the Joseph story? Historicity did not drive rab-
binic inquiries into the text—neither did questions regarding
authorship. Tradition assumed that Moses wrote the Torah at
God’s behest, but this presupposition rarely cramped rabbinic

The question of the genre of the Joseph text has been raised
by some as an argument against using a literary approach—we
do not know the genre, so how can we assess the Bible’s lit-
erary nature? Is Joseph an oral saga? A fairy tale? A novella?
The question of genre has proven to be a matter of scholarly
debate; the question begs comparison of Joseph with other
texts, ancient and modern.23 A quick glance at some Egyptian
literature indicates the presence of parallels.24 The story of Poti-
phar’s wife (Genesis 39) has a resemblance to “The Tale of Two
Brothers,” a thirteenth-century BCE Egyptian text that involves
a younger brother falsely accused of rape by the elder brother’s
lascivious wife. The scenes in Pharaoh’s court and the details
of Joseph’s agrarian policies abound with details of Egyptian
life. In “The Tradition of Seven Lean Years,” a text of uncertain
antiquity, a famine is resolved when Pharaoh receives guid-
ance from the god Khnum in a dream. This recalls the role of
Joseph as dream interpreter in Genesis 41. “The Instructions
of Amenhotep,” “The Teaching of King Merikare,” and “The
Maxims of Ptahhotep” offer examples of Egyptian “Instruc-
tional” or Wisdom Literature, akin to Proverbs, which some
modern scholars, beginning with Gerhard von Rad, consider
the best description of Joseph’s genre.25 As with questions of
historicity and authorship, lack of agreement about literary
genre has not hampered subsequent readers.
Joseph fades from the Bible after Genesis. Despite two passages
relating to the disposal of Joseph’s earthly remains in Exod.
13:19 and Josh. 24:32, and brief mentions in Psalms, Samuel, and
Chronicles, Joseph is reduced mainly to his role as progenitor of
the “House of Joseph,” that is, the important northern tribes of
Ephraim and Manasseh. The prophets ignore Joseph as an indi-
vidual, though Ezekiel movingly invokes the competition and
reconciliation of Joseph and Judah. Even Psalm 105 seems odd in
focusing on Joseph’s rulership rather than on his relationships:

line of [v’eleh toldot] Jacob: At seventeen years of age Joseph
tended the Áocks with his brothers, as a helper to the sons of
Bilhah and Zilpah.” The New Jewish Publication Society trans-
lation (NJPS) is wonderful: it is used throughout this book. But
every translation (and translator) makes choices. In this case
NJPS separates the names “Jacob” and “Joseph” by Àve words,
where the original has them in succession, and introduces a
paragraph break after “This, then, is the line of Jacob.”10 This

of the “bad reports”? Were these reports about all the broth-
ers, or exclusively about the sons of the midwives? Midrash
imagined a variety of misdeeds, including the eating of limbs
from living animals, a dietary practice banned since the time
of Noah. Joseph’s “shepherding” of the brothers has been read
ironically. But other commentators wonder whether or not the
brothers actually did anything wrong at all. Nearly everyone in
this story practices deception: Jacob, Joseph, the brothers, Mrs.
Potiphar, and Tamar.17 Joseph bears derogatory tales, but the
text does not tell us what they are or whether they are true.
What does the description “son of his old age” (ben zekunim)
signify? Joseph is not the youngest son; Benjamin had been
born two chapters ago. As James Kugel comments, “If anything,
Benjamin should have been loved more than any of the older
brothers.”18 Rashi, playing on an Aramaic homonym, imag-
ined that father and son looked alike. Just as likely, should one
travel down this route, is that Joseph looks like his mother,
Rachel, since their physical attractiveness is described in sim-
ilar language.19 Perhaps Jacob’s favoritism stems partly from
this visible reminder of his beloved wife. The preceding verse
describes Joseph as both a youth (na’ar) and also as seventeen
years old. Kugel points to a tradition that these ancient inter-
preters equated “old age” and “wisdom,” thus “son of his old
age” was understood as a comment on Joseph’s wisdom, argu-
ably quite limited in Genesis 37, but certainly evident in the
remainder of the story. Whatever “son of his old age” means,

conceal his dahm? Come, and let us sell him to the Yishm’elim,
and let not yadeinu [our hands] be upon him; for he is achinu [our
brother] and besareinu [our Áesh]. And his achim agreed. Then there
passed by anashim Midyanim socharim [men of Midyan, traders];
and they drew and lifted up Yosef out of the bor, and sold Yosef to
the Yishm’elim for esrim kesef; and they took Yosef to Mitzrayim.37
Then they sat down to a meal. Looking up, they saw a caravan
of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, their camels bearing gum,
balm, and ladanum to be taken to Egypt. Then Judah said to his
brothers, “What do we gain by killing our brother and covering up
his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, but let us not
do away with him ourselves. After all, he is our brother, our own
Áesh.” His brothers agreed. When Midianite traders passed by, they
pulled Joseph up out of the pit. They sold Joseph for twenty pieces
of silver to the Ishmaelites, who brought Joseph to Egypt. (NJPS)
