Self-Learning Module 7
Weather Data
1 INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 6 Module 7 on the Weather Data!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Schools Division Superintendent,
Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 6 Self-Learning Module on Weather Data!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

EXPECTATIONS

The module is about weather data.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. define weather data;
2. describe the weather patterns in the Philippines; and
3. realize the importance of knowing the weather in planning one’s
activity.

PRETEST

RECAP

Look at the picture. Can you still remember what to do before, during,
and after volcanic eruptions? Give one example for each.

Before the volcanic eruption

During the volcanic eruption
After the volcanic eruption

It is nice to know that you can still remember that lesson. You surely
know what to do before, during, and after a volcanic eruption!

LESSON

Do you plan your activities? What do you consider when planning an

activity?

Weather
refers to the
conditions of
the
atmosphere in
a region over a
short period of
time.
Weather affects our daily lives. The weather today may be different from
the weather tomorrow and in other places.

Weather data includes facts or numbers about the state of the

atmosphere, including temperature, wind speed, rain or snow, humidity, and
air pressure.

These days, we have some amazing ways to collect this kind of

data. We have high technology equipment that can measure everything
with accuracy. We can also measure them from all sorts of places: from
the ground, from the air, and even from space. Education Program

Data Collection Devices

Meteorologists are scientist who report and forecast weather

conditions. They use different equipment to study the weather. Some of these
are described below.

 Thermometers measure the temperature.

 Radar systems are used to create maps of rain
and snow and measure the motion of rain
clouds.

 Barometers measure the pressure in the

atmosphere. Pressure is how thick the air is;
how much air can be found in a particular
volume. For example, the higher up a
mountain you go, the less air there is.

 Rain gauges measure the amount of rain fall.

 Wind vanes, also known as a weathervane, tell

the wind direction.
 Anemometers measure wind speed and
direction.

 Hygrometers measure the humidity or how

much water the air contains at a particular
location.

Here is an example of weather data for the month of November 2020.

Farmers consider the seasons of the Philippines in planting and in
drying their crops, or even in doing some activities. The Philippines has two
kinds of seasons: the wet season (June to November) and dry season
(December to May). Each season has a particular characteristic.

A person can infer the season through weather patterns using weather
data.

The Philippines weather patterns are created by the prevailing winds. A

prevailing wind blows mostly from a single direction. The prevailing winds in
the Philippines are the southwest monsoon known as the habagat, and the
northeast monsoon known as the amihan.
Monsoon is a
seasonal wind
system that lasts
for a period of
months and
causes some
destructions in
some areas that
are affected.
Monsoon means
season.

lesson-7-wind-system-12-638.jpg (638×479) (slidesharecdn.com)

The southwest monsoon runs from May to October, and the northeast
monsoon prevails from November to early May. For most of the country, the
dry season is during amihan. The wet season starts in June and reaches its
peak in July and September.
But weather patterns change. The rain arrives late and lasts up to
December. In some regions, the seasons are different. Much of the eastern
seaboard, including Eastern Mindanao, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, and
Southeast Luzon, is rainy from December to March; and fairly dry when the
rest of the country is rainy.
Central Visayas, including Bohol, Negros, and Cebu, is not exposed to
the monsoon rains, and thus have a less distinct seasons. These provinces
experience rain at any time of the year. Typhoons are common from June to
November and they mainly pass over Luzon and Visayas. Typhoons also tend
to enhance the habagat, resulting in several days of heavy rains across vast
places of the country.
Severe weather conditions like typhoons and monsoon rains can be
predicted. Preparedness during these times is important to keep everybody
safe.
