Construction Methodology - Access Hole - Rev03
1.0 Introduction
This method statement describes in details all the scope involved in demolition and restoration
works.
2.0 Objective
The objective of this Method Statement is to provide a detailed procedure on how the
Works or part thereof are to be carried out in compliance with the Contract, and to carry- out
the Work Safely, quality workmanship and in timely manner.
3.0 Scope
This Method Statement (Methodology) shall apply for the demolition and restoration of access
hole intended for under deck repair works.
CQC in coordination with Project Supervision Team (Consultant) in-situ inspection for
compliance to the desired quality of the works.
4.0 Setting-out and Securing the Work Area (Site Possession - SP)
Generally, on turn-over of the Work Area (Site Possession) by ATI the Contractor’s
Survey Team together with assigned Safety Group and in coordination with the Project-
Supervision Team (AECOM Phils. Inc.) shall:
a. pre-establish the limits of the Site Possession area [Four (4) corners, minimum)] and
thereafter,
b. completely secure the Work Area
c. set-out in-situ the location and establish the limits of the access hole to be
demolished, complete with visible markings and reference gridlines.
d. Established records of access hole photos for reference.
5.0 Procedure
5.1 Demolition/removal of access hole for the repair of under deck elements
a. Workers all set with complete PPE’s appropriate to the activity, Including
environmental protection, i.e. noise and dust control
c. Demolish slab to the required limits using hand-held jack hammer, pneumatic type
or AC operated or any appropriate equivalent. Start the demolition approximately
at L/4 of the slab with dimension not exceeding 500mm x 500mm. Slab may be
broken into small chunks.
d. Cut the rebar needed at mid part and bend upside so that pipes and other materials
necessary for easy access during concrete pouring.

e. Dispose offsite concrete slab chunks /other debris resulting from the demolition
work.
5.2 False works, form setting, restoration of steel reinforcement, concrete placement
and inspection.
a. Upon completion of underdeck repair, install forms using phenolic boards, knotted
with tie wire on existing rebar.
b. Restor the steel reinforcement using approved method (welded connection) (refer
to Structural Welding Code- Reinforcing Steel –AWS D1.4).
CASE 3 : Cut rebars not in good condition, either heavily corroded or badly
deformed due to bending and not straight as before, or a
combination of both.
a. Cut remove and replace with new rebar the defective portion of
existing rebar of the same diameter.

Notes:
1. Splice bar shall be deformed type as existing reinforcement.
Use 16mm for 12mm
Use 20mm for 16mm
Length ± 200mm (min)
2. Presentation is applicable to all/any of existing reinforcement to be
restored.
Arc strikes outside the area of permanent welds shall be avoided, especially
on reinforcing bars.
Tack welds that do not become a part of permanent welds shall be prohibited.
Tack welds shall be subject to welding requirement of the code (AWS
D1.4), including pre heat, electrode selection and discontinuity acceptance
criteria.
Electrode for SMAW shall conform to the requirements of the latest edition of
ANSI/AWS A5.1, Specification for Carbon Steel Electrodes for Shielded Metal
Arc Welding Electrodes.
ATTACHMENT:
d. CQC in coordination with Project Supervision Team (AECOM Phils. Inc.) in-situ
inspection for compliance to the desired quality of the works prior to concrete
placement.
g. Protect newly cast concrete from possible damage and cure in accordance with
the requirements set-forth in the Technical Specifications / and or
engineering/construction industry practices.
a. Formworks shall be removed, tripped after all verification tests of hardened concrete
are conducted and tests results are made available.
