 Beginning and a Never Ending Journey

A career of Hios's developing screwdrivers started as Totsu Laboratory, established

by Mr. Katsuyuki Totsu and named after his family name. The first product was a very
unique screw called Totsu Screw. Totsu Screw, featured a slot and a center hole on its
head, ensuring an easy pick-up of screws without any help of magnet screw catch
mechanism. Totsu Screw was designed for use together with manual screwdrivers or
the company's first electric driver, Model M, equipped with a special bit. The combina-
tion of Totsu Screw and the special bit contributed to the screw fastening in mass-
production line.
This advanced screw and method was named as "Hole in One System", and the
acronym of it, HIOS, was adapted to a company name established in 1970.
Totsu screw

For more than a quarter of a century after Totsu Screw was introduced, they are still used for watches and toys.
From the very start of the company, Hios has been concerned not only with screws and screwdrivers but also
a mechanical fastening system and method. Hios has dedicated a whole company history to the development
of perfect mechanical fasteners and the most sophisticated and
gentle tools for every operator. Therefore our main products are
low voltage screw drivers being safe to operate and easy to
maintain.
At one time the industry was dominated by manual drivers and pneu-
matic drivers to offer.
As pneumatic drivers were thought long life and highly effective
products, because of their robust housing and high rotation speed,
they were accepted as a standard option and electric drivers were
only for the limited use.
However, after the plastic housing became popular in the electric
and electronics industry, the first electric screw driver of Hios, Type
M, occupied the market step by step, even with slow rotation speed
and no clutch mechanism. Type M became a first epoch making
screw driver of Hios. The Victory of Hios' Type M screw driver against
pneumatic was achieved by several advantages, such as no oil mist
Plane Touch System
exhaust, stable rotation speed and reduced damage to plastic
material.

Hios developed an unique and ideal clutch mechanism, Plane Touch System, for electric drivers and it was
used for the first CL-Drivers, released in 1977. CL-Driver was a progressed screw driver of Type M and had the
capability of accurate tightening torque and higher rotation speed than Type M. The mechanism of the clutch
system, "Plane Touch", is simple but effective. An inner gear case of planet gear is
automatically released when the rated torque is transported through bit axis to planet
gear. Also the exact and precise torque adjustment is possible very easily. CL-Driver
is driven by the voltage of less than 30 V DC and is made up of three blocks, Switch
assy., Motor assy. and Gear assy. It means CL-Driver is not only very safe but also an
easy-maintenance product.
With these two advantages, the exact and precise torque adjustment and easy main-
tenance, CL-Drivers were widely accepted by many customers, especially by many
operators of factories. CL-Driver became a successful product of Hios.

Electric Screwdriver Model M

In parallel with the rise of demand for small and precision screws, the industry market needed an exact mea-
surement and control of tightening and loosening torque of screw drivers. In 1978, Hios developed Model H, a
first digital torque tester, which could measure exact tightening torque. It is more difficult to measure loosening
torque than tightening torque, because a momentary torque should be sensed at the measurement of loosen-
ing torque. However, Hios offers an excellent torque tester which can measure both tightening and loosening
torque. The latest torque meters of Hios realises a real-time indication of measured torque by advanced sensing
technologies. Hios's torque meters now play a very important role in a critical quality control of assembly (e.g.
ISO 9000s).

Nowadays Hios concentrates on development of the fourth products generation. Following are some of the
superstars which will be released in the near future:

A Shock-absorbing electric screw drivers (Type SS)

The shock-absorbing screw driver in the CL-Series reduces some 80% of vertical vibration which can damage
a sensitive parts such as high density P.C.boards and SMD P.C.boards.

Low particle and low electric noise screw driver (Type CR)
In a clean room, particles and electric noise are always a concern of quality. With the low particle and low
noise electric screw drivers, it is easily realised to a decrease quality problem and also to increase throughput
of the production line in the clean room.

A new Totsu Screw (Patent pending)

The new Totsu Screw, featured a Philips type cross slit on its screw head, allows more than 3 times bigger
tightening torque than the present Philips screw and requires no vertical force to be tightened. Also a new driver
bit will be available for the new screw. With the combination of the new screw and screw bit, it will become really
easy to loose a hard tightened or over tightened screw and to remove parts from old and useless machines. It
should be big contribution for the Product Liability.
The new Totsu Screw will make a genuine revolution in screw tightening method, because the fastening torque
of the screw is transferred with perfect stability and it eliminates the cause of the most serious problem, bit's
coming off from slot of screw, dramatically. The New Totsu Screw is the best result of Hios's long time research
on screw and the mechanical fastening method.
In future the Trinity, the Totsu New Screw, the electric driver with real precision torque and the intelligent torque
meter, will be offered by Hios

Compared with high-technology companies, Hios seems to be an old fashioned company always concentrating
only on one development. But Hios is also committed to constant innovation in its field. Continuous concentra-
tion and contribution on "one target and one development" requires an extensive and deep knowledge not only
on electric drivers and screws but also on a general machinery and assemble technology.

SS drivers reduce impact approximately 80% less vi-
bration and impact shock to the working surface, per-
mitting a higher level of safety than previously pos-
sible when working on sensitive mechanisms like hard
