WOOD

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

WOOD

Wood is traditional building material, it is easily

worked, has durability and beauty. It has great ability
to absorb shocks from sudden load. In addition, wood
has freedom from rust and corrosion, is comparatively
light in weight, and is adaptable to a countless variety
of purposes.

WOOD

Classification of Trees
1. Hardwoods - 'deciduous' trees that have broad
leaves which are normally shed in the winter time
2. Softwood - 'conifers' trees that have needles
rather than leaves and that bear their seeds in
cones

WOOD

Lumber - is the term applied to wood after it has

been sawed or sliced into boards, planks, timbers,
etc.

Three categories of Lumber

1. Yard Lumber
2. Shop Lumber
3. Structural Lumber

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

WOOD

Finishes of wood
1. S1S
2. S2S
3. S4S

Methods and Manner of Log Sawing

1. Plain sawing
2. Quarter sawing
3. Live saw

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

WOOD

Seasoning of Lumber
1. Air-drying
2. Kiln-drying

WOOD
Unit of Measurement

Board Foot is the unit of measure used in computing

the volume of lumber. One board foot simply mean,
one square foot by one-inch thick lumber or an
equivalent of 144 cu. inches.

The width and thickness of commercial lumber are

expressed in inches while the length is in feet or
even numbers.
AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp
WOOD
Unit of Measurement

Board Foot is found by dividing the product of the

thickness, width and length, by 12.

Sample:

Find the total board feet of 5 pcs - 2"x6"14' lumber

Board foot = (5 X (2x6x14))/12 = 70 bd.ft.

BUILDING BOARDS

A group of sheets of building materials often faced

with paper or vinyl, suitable for use as a finished
surface on walls, ceilings, etc.

This group of boards are all flat, relatively thin in

section and have been made to standard sizes,
usually 4'x8' ft.

BUILDING BOARDS

Kinds of Building Boards

1. Plywood 9. Corkboard
2. hardwood 10. Paperboard
3. Insulating fiberboard 11. Mineral fiberboard
4. Chipboard 12. Plastic foamboards
5. Particle board
6. Gypsum board
7. Strawboard
8. Asbestos-cement board
AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp
CEILING BOARDS

By Effective Coverage Area Method

1. Divide the total ceiling area by the effective

covering of one ceiling board

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

CEILING BOARDS
Referring to Fajardo's Table 4-4
Boards Size in Effective Covering per Number of pieces per
Centimeters Board Square meter

30x30 .090 11.111

40x40 0.16 6.250

40x60 0.24 4.167

60x60 0.36 2.778

60x120 0.72 1.389

FORMS

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

FORMS

Form is a temporary boarding, sheathing or pan used

to produce the desired shape and size of concrete.

Form should be simple and economically designed in

such a manner that they are easily removed and
reassembled without damage to themselves or to the
concrete.

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

FORMS

Classification of Forms:

As to Materials:
1. Wood
2. Metal
3. Plastic
4. Composite

AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp

FORMS - COLUMNS
Formula in finding the materials for square and
rectangular column forms

P = 2 (a + b) + 0.20

Where: P = lateral perimeter of the column

a = shorter side of the column
b = longer side of the column
0.20 = constant value for the lapping of
form joints
AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp
FORMS - COLUMNS
1. P = 2 (a + b) + 0.20
2. Multiply P by the height of one column times
the number of columns to get the total area of
the forms.
3. Divide total area of the forms by 2.88 (area of a
4'x8' form board) to get the number of forms.
4. Multiply the number of forms found by 29.67
(from Fajardo's Table 5-1) to get the board foot
of frame required.

FORMS - BEAMS
Formula in finding the materials for beam and
girder forms

P = 2 (d) + b + 0.10

Where: P = perimeter of the side of the form

d = sides for form
b = bottom form
0.10 = constant value for the lapping of
form joints
AR. ARJEE LOUIE DC. JIMENEZ, uap, rmp
FORMS - BEAMS
1. P = 2 (d) + b + 0.10
2. Multiply P by the length and number of beams
to get total area of the forms
3. Divide total area of the forms by 2.88 (area of a
4'x8' form board) to get the number of forms.
4. Multiply the number of forms found by 25.06
(from Fajardo's Table 5-1) to get the board foot

SCAFFOLDING & STAGING

Scaffolding is a temporary structure of wooden

poles and planks providing platform for workers to
stand on while erecting or repainting of building.

Staging is a more substantial framework

progressively built up as tall building rises up.
