13 Assertion: Molarity of solution independent of temperature.
Reason : Volume of a solution is temperature dependent, i.e. it changes with change in
temperature.
14 18Assertion: In NH3, N is sp3 -hybridised, but angle is found to be 107°
Reason: The decrease in bond angle is due to repulsion between the lone pair on nitrogen and
bond pair between N and H.

3
Reason: The oxygen of peroxide is in −1 oxidation state and it is converted to zero oxidation

The metallic or non-metallic character of elements in the periodic table can beexplained
using ionization energy. The elements with low ionization energy are the easiest to convert
into positively charged ions. These are metals. The transition metals are placed in the
middle of the table, and as they go from leftto right, the trend to ionize them keeps
repeating. On the right side of the table, there are metalloids like B, C, Si, which show
more covalent than ionic character, while the extreme right houses non-metals, usually
gases that form negative ions.

a) How would you explain the fact that the first ionization enthalpy of sodiumis lower than
that of magnesium but its second ionization enthalpy is higher than that of magnesium?
b) How does ionization energy vary i)down the group
ii)across the period in a periodic table

ii)Which among the following have the largest and the smallest sizes?
Mg2+, Mg, Al3+, Al

(d)What are the factors affecting ionization energy of elements?

Boundary surface diagrams of constant probability density for different orbitals give a
fairly good representation of the shapes of the orbitals. In this representation, a boundary
surface or contour surface is drawn in space for an orbital on which the value of probability
density |ψ|2 is constant. In principle many such boundary surfaces may be possible.

5
However, for a given orbital, only that boundary surface diagram of constant probability
density is taken tobe good representation of the shape of the orbital which encloses a
region or volume in which the probability of finding the electron is very high.

(a) Draw the boundary surface diagrams of d orbitals that are on axis.
(b) Define nodal surface.
(c)Draw the boundary surface diagrams of 2p orbitals and find the shape of 2p orbital.

iii) n = 3, l = 1
n = 2, l = 1
