THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USINGPPP“PRESENTATION,PRACTICE,PRODUCTION”

TOWARD STUDENT’S SPEAKING ABILITY TO INTRODUCTION


OF THE FIRST YEARS STUDENTS AT STATE
JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 01 DURI
Speaking is very important for us because by using speaking people know what we are

means, sometimes people cannot understand about the meaning by using gesture or body

language ,so we must speak to make the people understand what we are meaning. “Speaking is a

second or foreign language has often been viewed as the most demanding of the four

skills”(Bailey and Savage 1994, p. vii).

In this era of globalization is the ability to speak is in need in everyday in daily life .Of

course one in speaking we also have to use language that is easily understood by the other to

speak our part to speak of knowledge is also very in need it as a reference so that what we are

talking about more meaningful .

Therefore this synopsis is very important for us especially for student, it can help the

student when the students want to speak English with their friend or the other people. According

to Howe” This more explicit support for speaking and listening has put it on a par with the

advice and support relating to the teaching of reading and writing. Speaking and Listening has

tended to be an aspect of the English curriculum that is less rigorously and systematically

planned, taught and assessed “(Howe 1997: 1)

When the student speak English with their friend or their teacher, they usually use the

words which they know the meaning, the teacher show the student how to greetings and then the

students practice and use it when they meet the other people.
Ability to master speaking has a good purpose to make students want to speak English

and make them not shy to speak in front of a class or in other official forums . Ability speak

English can also be used in their daily lives, they can use this language when they're hanging out

with friends or while playing air so that English can be a major language without forgetting

mother tongue.

Based on syllabus provides speaking as one of the English standard competences that

must be taught and learned in junior high school. In SMPN 01 DURI ,speaking has been taught

since the first year of English teaching period. It taught twice a week with time duration 45

minutes for a hour learning. According to school based curriculum, in learning English students

should be able to use language in communication either or oral language in order to

commemorate the global era.1

Ideally, the students in SMPN 01 DURI should be able to speak English with the

technique based on syllabus. But, in reality, teacher found that many students still have

difficulties in speaking learning. The problems found by the teachers are :

 Some students do not about the vocabulary well

 Some students worry to make mistakes in speaking

 Some students do not understand what tenses can be used in speaking

To improve speaking ability in learning speaking needs a strategy and technique that can

help them a solution. There is a good strategy that can help the students. PPP

“Presentation, Practice, Productio “ for speaking learning it can help students to improve

their speaking ability and it can create and enjoyable atmosphere in the classroom.

Based on explanation and problems, the writers is interested in conducting a research

entitled

“ THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PPP “PRESENTATION ,PRACTICE ,AND

PRODUCTION “ TOWARD SPEAKING ABILITY AT STATE SENIOR HIGH

SCHOOL 1 DURI.
B. Formulation of the problem

1. How is the students’ ability in speaking to introduction before being taught by using

PPP”presentation,practice,production”?

2. How is the students’ ability in speaking to introduction after being taught by using PPP

“presentation,practice and production” ?

3. Is there significant effect of using PPP “presentation,practice,production” to increase

students’ speaking ability of the first years students at state junior high school 01 Duri?

C. Methodology of Research

The design of research is used in this research is pre experimental research. Experimental

research is one of research design used to determine the influences an outcome or dependent

variable .2 This research operates two variables and consist of two classes.They are experimental

class and control class. This research will be located at the Junior high school 01 Duri. The

subject of this research is the first year students at Junior High school 01 Duri. This research will

be conducted at Junior High School 01 Duri ,which is located on Duri, Riau.The technique of

collecting data will use observation and test, while the technique of analyzing data is will use

statistical method that is descrptive and ANOVAs by using SPSS version 16.
