Bait & Stitch
“H mmmph !” I huff after I end the call. “The store won’t pay
the shipping cost to return the dress. And I won’t pay the
shipping cost because it would be much less expensive to
make the two-and-a-half-hour round trip and return the
thing myself.”
“But it’s their fault. They sent you the wrong dress,”
April sympathizes.
“I know, but they made an exception by shipping it to me.
They only offer in-store pickup. The store manager made an
exception because I live far away. They won’t pay to ship it
twice.” I shrug. “I understand their position. I just don’t like
it. The manager said I have thirty days to return it. I’ll go
after the holidays to avoid the Christmas rush.”
“What will you wear to the gala?” Connie asks.
“I’ll shop for something else when I return the dress,
otherwise I have a few options in my closet. It was this
specific dress.” I tap on the box. “I fell in love with it.”
The bell over the door jingles, and Sophie springs to
attention, ready to greet the newcomer.
“Hey, handsome! I thought you had a big meeting this
morning with Jules Janssen’s security team?”
Eric kisses me on the forehead and hands me a to-go cup
from Latte Da.
“They cancelled.” He shrugs.
“Again? Did they reschedule?” I ask. “The VIPs fly in
tomorrow.”
“They didn’t reschedule.” He sits in one of the
overstuffed chairs with a sigh. “Fine with me. They asked for
the meeting.”
Sophie jumps up and nestles into his lap, and he scratches
her neck.
Eric is the chief of the Harmony Lake Police Department.
Jules Janssen’s security team has been harassing him to
meet with them about the security arrangements for the
wedding. They want to coordinate efforts to protect the
wedding guests and manage the unwanted media people.
This is the third time they’ve cancelled, but it’s the first time
they haven’t rescheduled.
While Eric talks to Connie and April, I crack the lid on my
gingerbread latte and savour the moment when the warmth
of the first sip touches my soul.
“Is that the dress you ordered for the gala?” Eric asks,
nodding at the box on the counter.
“It’s the dress I’m returning to the store.”
“Where’s the dress for the gala?”
“Either at the mall or in my closet.”
Eric furrows his brow. His brown eyes and handsome face
cloud with confusion. But before I can elaborate, the bell
jingles again. The only place busier than Knitorious today is
Santa’s workshop.
“Hi, Amber!” I smile.
Amber Windermere is Jules Janssen’s executive project
planner. Amber says it’s a fancy title for an event planner.
She’s been staying in Harmony Lake since October,
overseeing the seemingly endless wedding details.
“Hi, Megan.” Amber smiles. “Hi, everyone.” She smiles
and waves at everyone in the cozy sitting area.
Amber is young––I’d guess mid-twenties––and
ambitious. I’ve only known her for a couple of months, but
she’s career-focused and determined to make this wedding
an enormous success. According to Amber, if this wedding
goes off without a hitch, it will launch her career to a whole
new level. When I asked how she landed such a high-profile
gig, Amber told me Jules requested her because she was so
pleased with a previous party Amber organized for her.
“I have a donation for the yarn drive,” Amber explains,
reaching into her bag. “It looks like I’ll be leaving town
sooner than expected, and I won’t be needing this yarn.”
I’ve been teaching Amber how to knit. Event planning is
stressful––especially when the entire world is watching––
and she was looking for a hobby to help her relax. We knit
together a few times each week. Amber is a brilliant student.
She mastered the knit and purl stitches right away, and her
stitches are remarkably consistent for someone who swears
she’s never picked up knitting needles before we met.
“Are you sure?” I ask. “You’re doing so well. Maybe if
your next wedding is stressful, you’ll want to pick up the
needles again.”
“That’s sweet of you to say, Megan,” Amber says. “But
you’re the only person I know who knits. After I leave
Harmony Lake, I won’t have a knitting guru to help me.”
I’m about to offer to video chat with Amber when she
needs knitting help, and recommend several good YouTube
channels for new knitters, but Connie speaks first.
“Why are you leaving town, Amber? Is everything all
right? Is there a problem at home?”
“Nothing like that….” Amber says, flashing Connie a
wide, bright, reassuring smile.
Amber opens her mouth to continue speaking, but doesn’t
get the chance because our local florist Phillip rushes in. His
eyes search the store with determined urgency until his
focus lands on Amber.
“Is it true?” Phillip demands, glaring at her. “Is it true
that Jules Janssen cancelled her wedding? She and her huge
guest list aren’t coming to Harmony Lake?”
The wheeze from our collective gasp could rival a giant air
mattress with a leak.
CHAPTER 3
A shiver runs along my spine, and I’m not sure if it’s because
of the frosty morning air, the dead body behind me, or both.
The cold is bearable because the brick building acts as a
shield against the chilly wind coming off the lake.
Eric is on the phone. He’s rallying his troops and setting
Seb’s murder investigation in motion.
I hit send on a group text to Hannah, Connie, April, and
my sister, then put our marriage license under my arm, and
slip my frigid fingers back inside my warm mitts. Burrowing
my chilly hands into my parka pocket, I shudder again, and
my teeth chatter as another shiver courses through me. I
resist the urge to turn around and look at Seb. To confirm
this is real. Part of my brain wants to convince me it’s not
and wants me to check that it’s definitely Seb; he’s definitely
dead and definitely frozen. I’m trying to ignore that part of
my brain.
“Go inside, babe,” Eric says when he ends his call. “You’ll
catch your death out here.”
I nod, relieved to put some distance between myself and
the frozen corpse.
“Are you OK?” he asks, rubbing my shoulders and
scanning me from head to toe. “Are you in shock or
anything?”
