Introduction
This book tries to catch the exciting synergy between new and
still emerging musical forms and rapidly changing technologies.
To address the challenges of representing one of the significant
cultural shifts of the last century and into our own, while at the
same time doing justice to the open-endedness and potentialities
of a new audio culture, has meant accepting and embracing the
discontinuities of discovery, reflection and materiality that would
constitute a new electronic music history.
Walter Benjamin famously argued in his essay on art
and technology that ‘mechanical reproduction’ changed the
relationship between the ‘work of art’ and cultural value.1 For
him, the mechanical reproduction of works of art caused a
certain loss of their ‘aura’ and meaningfulness. Nowhere is this

Introduction
Each hearing person who listens to the radio, watches tv, goes
to the movies, goes dancing . . . has built up, has been forced
(in order to be able to handle her or his perceptions of the
sound) – to build up an appreciable competence in trans-
lating and using the music impressions that stream in from
loudspeakers in almost every living space . . . Thus, to listen
adequately hence does not mean any particular, better, or
‘more musical,’ ‘more intellectual,’ or ‘culturally superior’ way
of listening. It means that one masters and develops the ability
to listen for what is relevant to the genre in the music.7

time. Tape recorders did not appear at rtf until about 1951.)
During this recording process, Schaeffer hit upon the idea to
remove the beginning (attack) of the bell sounds, leaving only
the remaining parts – the steady-state and decay: ‘Without its
percussion [attack transients], the bell becomes an oboe sound.
I prick up my ears. Has a breach appeared in the enemy ranks?
Has the advantage changed sides?’7
Schaeffer also imagined what would one day become known
as a sampler, an instrument with an ‘organ’ keyboard with each
key linked to a turntable. Each turntable would have a library of
discs (one sound per disc) that could contain ‘every conceivable
instrument, musical or not’.8 He realized that his idea, while
possible, was not technically practical at that time. He returned
to his experiments but composed nothing.
Two months later, a still frustrated Schaeffer, ‘looking for a
shortcut’, entered the Batignolles station in Paris with a mobile
sound crew from rtf, intending to create a ‘concert of railway
engines’. By chance, there were six engines in the station. The
drivers were willing to ‘improvise’ with their engines. Each had
a remarkably different sonic character. He returned to his rtf
studio to cut discs of the recordings. By dropping and picking
up the needle, he was able to isolate rhythmic segments of the
trains, and by altering the speed of the turntables was able to
transform some of the railway sounds in such a way that they

The lone man had to find his symphony within himself, not
by simply thinking up music in the abstract but by being his
own instrument. A lone man possesses much more than the
twelve notes of the trained voice. He shouts, he whistles, he
punches, he laughs, he groans. His heart beats, his breathing
accelerates, he pronounces words, calls out, and others call
in reply. Nothing echoes a lone cry more than the hubbub of
the crowd.10

context.
Strikingly, the language of weakness and innocence
(as opposed to the strength and rigour of the aforementioned
composers) in the above review inadvertently reveals a future
for the piece: ‘The pity of it is that an innocent listener . . .
would be perfectly justified in assuming that the majority of
contemporary music was in an enfeebled state.’16 Ironically,
Presque rien ultimately revived a kind of innocence for the
listener willing to be returned to the sonic world around

is variable for each realization of the piece, but the tape lengths
spliced together to make the music – effectively metrical
proportions – mean that the formal structure is always fixed.

with the school’s Ampex tape recorder led him to the conclusion
that contemporary composers must embrace the compositional
possibilities of the medium. In 1962 the group moved to a new
location that Sender and composer Morton Subotnick had
found to become the San Francisco Tape Music Center. Their
equipment was modest, including sine- and square-wave
generators on loan from the Conservatory. Other experimental
composers working there included Terry Riley, Steve Reich,
Joseph Byrd and Robert Ashley. The San Francisco composers
had no stake in the coming rift between musique concrète and
elektronische Musik in Europe, preferring a less theoretically
charged aesthetic.
The San Francisco Tape Music Center was in many
ways unique. Whereas most studios around the world were
institutionally sponsored, it was conceived of as a non-
academic, public-access space for composers. The studio also
fostered performances and collaborations that included artists
involved in improvisation, mixed media, experimental theatre
and happenings with innovative figures such as Bruce Baillie
and Stan Brakhage.

the tape composer could reorder, delete and even copy the
material stored on tape. The tape recorder also provided the
composer with the possibilities of creating tape loops and tape
echo effects.
Just as Edgard Varèse had imagined the electronic music
medium long before it existed, Schaeffer’s sonic-mechanical
developments adumbrate the whole history of electroacoustic
music. It seems that the whole future of electronic music
history is presaged here!

heads in contact with it. Each playback head also had its own
pre-amplifier and filter arrangement. This invention was used
primarily for reverberation and echo effects.26 Here, the
distance between the record and multiple playback heads was
used to musical advantage. After recording a sound on the
playback head, it would repeat each time it passed one of the ten
playback heads. Depending on the tape speed, the resulting
sound would be a series of echoes if the tape were moving
relatively slowly, or a reverberated sound if the tape speed
were sufficiently fast.27

There were a few pieces of effects gear that I would carry with
me sometimes. One of them was a box called an ‘Echoplex.’
It was basically a little tape recorder that the signal passed
through with an adjustable record head that enabled me
to wiggle it while the sound was going through and get all
manner of weird effects . . . I also used an old ring modulator
made, I think, by Oberheim.29

machine and one into the back of the other, and made these
two loops as identical as I could. I pushed the two start buttons
and, by sheer chance, they started in unison. The odds are not
too good for that to happen, but they did.
I had the stereo phones on and it felt like the sound was in
the middle of my head. It seemed like it went from the left side
of my head and down my arm and across the floor and then it
began to reverberate. And finally, I got to this relationship that

What on earth were they talking about? Carrie wondered vaguely.
She hadn't been to the library in months. "James," she called, "Did
you ever get me a library book called The Perfect Hostess?"
"Gosh, no, Mom," said James.
