SECTION A: Comprehension
Question 1

Call for cell-phones to be banned at schools

1. The national Association of school Governing Bodies wants a ban on children using
cellphones at South Africa’s schools. This association makes sure that all schools have
the same rules and regulations.

2. Mr Mkhize, the association secretary, was reported as having said cellphones were a
distraction that resulted in the disintegration of the teaching environment. He is
worried that cellphones were a distraction that resulted in the disintegration of the
teaching environment. He is worried that cell-phone are interfering with learning and
teaching. “Leaners are not listening in class, they are playing on their phones. In
assemblies and in lesson time, teachers are being interrupted by cellphones ringing
and beeping, “says Mkhize.

3. Another issue that Mr Mkhize is concerned about is social networking. “The things
children find on social networks are shocking. They are like pollution and prevent
them from learning anything, “he said. “I know of many leaners who are being
exposed to drugs, alcohol and sex from these social networks. This is not what we
want for our leaners!”.

4. The Association believes that it does not help to simply tell children that they must
switch their cellphones off in school time. They must be told to leave them at home
where they cannot be a distraction and cannot be stolen.

5. Other school governing bodies said it would be impossible to enforce a ban on

cellphones. Paul Cradock, head of the Federation of Governing Bodies of SA schools,
said the onus was on teachers to ensure phones were not used for the wrong
purpose.

6. “As we are aware,” he says, cell phones are a very big part of our lives and to impose
a ban on them will be very difficult to do.’ However, he does believe that cellphone
theft is a big problem at many schools.

7. Tim Geoffreys, chief executive of the Governing Body Foundation, said it would be
selfish to ban cellphones, as they were an important safety device between parents
and children. He also says that “cellphones provide leaners access to technology and
we cannot deprive them of this.”

WORD BANK:
Ban - Officially or legally prohibit (something).
Impose - Force (an unwelcome decision or ruling) on someone.

QUESTION 3
SUMMARY WRITING
Summarise the following text on how to show respect.
Instructions
1. Summarise SEVEN TIPS on how to show respect.
2. List the seven tips from 1 to 7.
3. Write only ONE fact per line.
4. Use your own words as far as possible.
5. Do not use more than 70 words.
6. Indicate the number of words you have used.
7. Use proper language.

Examples of showing respect

Everyone has different backgrounds, beliefs, and ways of doing things. It’s vital to
remember that we can still treat each other in a manner that doesn’t erode our
values, skills, beliefs, and ways of doing things. Common courtesy and
consideration for others are vital. We need each other to do almost everything, so
we all must get along and respect one another.

Here's how you can show respect in your everyday life.

Use a person’s name during a conversation, good examples of showing respect to

others include referring to someone by name – it makes your message register with
them better. For example, it would be appropriate to use “Mr. Jones” or “Mrs. Smith”
instead of just “Jones” or “Smith”. This makes them feel special and important. Do
not talk down to people. We are different. Even if someone has less experience than
you do in a specific thing, that doesn’t mean they are not smart. Avoid interrupting
others, Interrupting someone while they are speaking is not only rude, it can also be
disruptive and frustrating for the person that is trying to speak.

Avoid gossiping. Gossiping is rude because it involves talking about other people
behind their back, rather than confronting them directly. Respect people’s personal
space. Space is important to everyone. Some people need more space, and some
less. We all have our comfort levels with how much space we want to be around
other people. Don’t stand too close to someone when talking to them, and give
people room to move around.

Use positive body language. Your body language can say a lot about how you feel
about someone. Avoid crossing your arms or legs while you’re talking to someone,
as this can make you look defensive or uninterested. Avoid speaking negatively
about others It’s always important to be positive about the people around you,
whether you know them well or not. Talking badly about someone else is never
respectful, and can make you look bad in the eyes of others. Be aware of your facial
expressions. You have to be careful with your face as well — if you’re smiling, do it
genuinely and not so broadly that you seem fake.
