MATTER IN OUR
SURROUNDINGS
What is a matter?
Anything that occupies space and has
mass can be called matter.
• Take 2–3 crystals of potassium
permanganate and dissolve them in
100 mL of water.
• Take approximately 10 mL of this solution
into 90 mL of clear water.
• Take 10 mL of this solution and put it into
another 90 mL of clear water. Keep diluting
the solution like this 5 to 8 times.
just a few crystals of potassium
permanganate can colour a large
volume of water.
Water
particles of one type
of matter get into the
spaces between particles
of the other.
This shows that there is
space between particles of
matter.
particles of matter intermix on
their own with each other.
Kelvin Scale
K= 0C + 273.15
Convert the following temperatures to the
kelvin scale.
an increase of temperature
a decrease in humidity
Ans .
(a) 574 - 273 = 3010C
(b) (i) Steam (gas) (ii) liquid (iii) liquid.
(c) At room temperature, forces of attraction between
molecules of water are not high and position of particle are
not fixed, particles are moving and water
can flow from high level to lower level.
It shows water is liquid at room temperature.
Assertion And Reasoning
Direction: In the following questions, the Assertion
and Reason have been put forward.
Read the statements carefully and choose the
correct alternative from the following:
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the
Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the Reason is
not the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason is true.
Assertion : Dry ice is solid CO 2.
Reason : Dry ice is same as ice
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the
Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the
Reason is not the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason
is true.
Assertion : Gases exert pressure on the walls of the container.
Reason : The intermolecular force of attraction is very strong in
gases.
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the
Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the
Reason is not the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason
is true.
Assertion : When a solid melts, its temperature remains the
same.
Reason : The heat gets used up in changing the state by
overcoming the forces of attraction between the particles.
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the
Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the
Reason is not the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason
is true.
Assertion : In pressure cooker temperature
of water becomes more than 1000C.
Reason : Boiling point is directly proportional to pressure acting
on liquid.
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the
Reason is the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the
Reason is not the correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason
is true.
