1 Job purpose

Fundamental to the role is the safe and effective maintenance provision (under the City
Council’s Operator’s Licence) to high profile front line vehicles operated by City Services,
Waste Management and external customers such as Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service
(NFRS). The post holds a responsibility for the management of: the vehicle workshop; the
plant workshop; and the MOT testing station.

The post holder will actively seek commercial opportunities to create and develop income
potential; prepare business plans to develop the Workshop business; and participate in
procurement bids and pricing strategies. They will be responsible for the management of
existing and new commercial contracts providing vehicle and/or plant maintenance.

2 Principal duties and responsibilities

1. To ensure daily workshop functions operate in an effective, flexible, customer focused


manner and comply fully with SLA and contract requirements. These include the vehicle
workshop, which carries out planned and reactive maintenance for all 450 vehicles in the
corporate fleet and 200 vehicles from external customers; and the plant workshop, which
provides planned and reactive maintenance for 1000 items of plant.

2. To provide complete budgetary control for all workshop services and bases.

3. Ensure that high levels of productivity are achieved leading to effective use of resources
to minimise vehicle downtime and achievement of programmed work schedules. To
monitor and control staff performance addressing disciplinary and sickness issues in line
with corporate guidelines.

4. To cost effectively plan maintenance operations to meet departmental financial targets


and ensure timely, accurate and prescribed data is provided to customers.

5. To actively seek commercial opportunities to create and develop income potential.


Prepare business plans for the Workshop to develop the Workshop business. Participate
in procurement bids and pricing strategies.

6. To ensure Health and Safety requirements are controlled and monitored at all times.

7. To be the Designated Manager for the VOSA MOT testing station, taking responsibility for
testing the roadworthy condition of the entire fleet of licensed taxis within the city and
ensuring VOSA and Taxi Licensing requirements are fulfilled and monitored for legal
compliance relating to Operators licence and MOT testing.
8. To develop technical expertise in all aspects of fleet maintenance and repair through
continuous improvement. To provide technical advice to service officers, the Fleet
Manager and the Integrated Transport Manager.

9. To liaise with external and internal customers at all levels to provide feedback on service
and update Key Performance Indicators.

10. To ensure staff training reviews and programmes are carried out in line with service
needs and staff development requirements.

11. To generate reports and statistics requested by the Head of Commercial & Transport
Services and Integrated Transport Manager.

12. To provide support for the Integrated Transport Manager

13. To liaise with external contractors and suppliers, monitoring cost, performance and quality
of services provided, including accident and insurance repairs.

14. To control systems and documentation to meet quality and environmental accreditation.

15. To attend training initiatives, shows, meetings and seminars as required. Lead on related
matters as requested.

16. Be available for emergency call out situations departmentally and corporately.

large workshop either in a public sector or

of commercial success.  
Experience of delivering organisational and
cultural change, and of shaping the delivery of
services to meet the needs of customers and
communities.
 
Experience of successfully bidding, tendering for
and winning external contracts for the provision of
vehicle maintenance.
 
Experience of implementing and delivering new
vehicle maintenance contracts within a workshop
environment.
 
Experience of managing and providing excellent
customer services at all levels.

Experience of partnership working and building  


successful working relationships with a range of
private and public sector organisations.

Skills & aptitudes Well developed communication skills in a range of   


digital and written media, and the ability to
communicate.

Ability to identify and act on opportunities to


develop income streams for the workshops.  

Able to demonstrate leadership and people


management skills in a front line delivery service.  
Providing information to a wide range and variety
