MBA in ADVANCED PROJECT MANAGEMENT


(MBA APM)

INTRODUCTION
Projects are undertaken in the public and private sectors to meet the economic needs of industry and
society. It offers immense potential for project businesses all over the world. Managing projects of
large scale is a vital key to successful project delivery in a variety of sectors. Achieving excellence
and innovations in the infrastructure, industrial, financial and service sectors requires skills and
sound knowledge of advanced project management theory and practice.
The focus of the Programme is on large and complex engineering and non-engineering projects,
which require specialised human resources. Competent project professionals are required to manage
and lead the project successfully. The Programme adopts a multidisciplinary approach comprising
project management and systems engineering so that budding project managers are prepared to work
in different sectors of the industry. Industry-ready project professionals are employed in oil and gas,
software development, manufacturing, energy, infrastructure and construction including clients,
contracting and consulting organizations. Such trained manpower is also required by various
organizations for education, health care and management of rural projects. The MBA APM
addresses the techno-managerial needs of various projects in different sectors of the industry.
Graduates from different streams like Engineering, Planning, Architecture, Computer & IT,
Science, Commerce, Arts, Pharmaceutical and Agriculture after completing this Programme gain a
multidisciplinary exposure for the working of modern projects.
MBA APM is a unique course and hardly any other reputed institute offers this course in India. The
curriculum has been reviewed and updated from time-to-time to incorporate the latest advances in
project management to build competencies in diverse areas.

VISION AND MISSION


Vision
The School of Project Management will provide world class specialized project management
education and develop personnel to manage complex projects in sectors such as oil & gas, software,
rural, education, healthcare, energy, manufacturing and construction.

OBJECTIVES
The MBA APM aims to transform graduates into dynamic and knowledgeable project managers.
The curriculum enables them to lead functions in project-based organisations. The key objectives
of MBA APM are:
- To impart sound knowledge of the theory and practice of project management.

- To train students so that they can acquire proficiency in the management of projects in
different sectors.
- To develop students’ skills in financial, marketing, human resource, operations and supply
chain related aspects of project management.
- To provide key techniques for management and leadership of projects with emphasis on
various aspects of project management e.g. planning, quality, time, costs, risk management,
software and information technology.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS
This Programme is based on the concepts and practices of project management and combines subject
knowledge with related practices.
The first-year curriculum includes various General Core and Programme Core courses to improve
students’ understanding of key aspects in business management. During the second year, General
Electives, Programme Electives and Domain Electives are offered to develop in-depth knowledge
of project management in different sectors and domains. Practical experience is also gained by the
students through site visits and summer internships. Project work under the supervision of a faculty
guide, develops skills in scientific analysis of problems and report writing. Computer application
skills along with knowledge of quantitative methods create an analytical edge for managerial
decision making that is vital for managing complex projects. The students are trained on a suite of
software required for project management and analysis.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES
PO1. Have a strong theoretical and practical project management inputs.
PO2. Should be able to conceptualize, plan, schedule, control and deliver complex projects with
minimal supervision.
PO3. Should be able to apply BIM and digital technologies for project management.
PO4. Should be able to demonstrate ethical approach, professionalism and governance to work in
project teams in India or abroad.
PO5. Enhancing placement prospects by providing project management courses applicable in
different sectors.
PO6. Prepare graduates to work for sponsoring firms, specialized consulting firms, management
consulting firms, NGOs and financial institutions in positions of responsibility in India or abroad.

DURATION AND ORGANISATION


The duration of the Programme is of two years. It is conducted in four semesters with suitable
breaks. Semesters I, II, III and IV are devoted to classroom learning, acquiring hands-on experience
in software, managerial skills, research techniques and presentation skills. Summer internship is
scheduled after Semester II and then electives are covered in Semester III and Semester IV. Each
semester has 15 weeks of teaching and one week of term end examination.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates with a regular bachelor’s degree in engineering / architecture / planning / science / arts
/ commerce / finance / banking / management / economics / mathematics / statistics / agriculture /
pharmacy / information technology from a recognised institution / university are eligible.
Candidates seeking admission are required to have secured minimum 50% aggregate marks at
graduation level. Final year graduating students can also apply.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
The curriculum is organised into four semesters. Each semester, students are exposed to a variety
of theory courses and workshop practices meant for hands-on practical training. The semester-wise
distribution of courses and workshops is given in Programme details.
i. Courses
Courses may be of two or three credits depending upon the requirement for effective coverage.
Different pedagogical tools are used to make the course interesting and useful.
ii. Tutorials /Practical
Workshop exercises in the form of practical provide an opportunity to the students to learn
through practice and it forms an integral part of the academic learning for the students. A variety
of workshops are conducted to develop relevant skills important to manage projects efficiently.
a. Tutorials / Computer Practice Laboratory (CPL)
Computer Practice Laboratories integrate information technology and software
applications relevant to various management functions. The software used in projects
worldwide such as MSP, Oracle Primavera, Palisade @Risk, BIM, Lynx, Candy, Microsoft
Dynamics and SPSS are practiced during the laboratory sessions. Efficient and creative
application of IT tools is the USP of NICMAR University, Pune.
b. Managerial Skills (Mandatory Non-Graded, Non-credit)
Managerial Skills workshops are an important part of the curriculum. These workshops
equip students with managerial communication, presentation, team management, career
management and other soft skills. They gain hands-on practical experience so as to acquire
the following skills:
- Managerial communication and people skills.
- Cross-cultural communication and communication at work.
- Interview skills, group discussion and career development skills.
- Team management, negotiation, problem solving and other essential soft skills.
Group assignments, audio-visual presentations, role-plays, group discussions, language lab
sessions and case studies are some of the elements of the pedagogy used for these workshops.
Students are trained in Business English through Orel Digital Language Lab, interactive
language learning software. It enhances communication skills of students and enables them
to communicate confidently.
The University organises visits to various project sites. Attendance is compulsory for these
visits. Students are encouraged to take the initiative in organising these visits. Students pay
for their expenses on tours. The University provides them with the bus facility for site visits.

iii. Project Work


Project Work is an independent and individual requirement that consists of 10 credits. The
student is expected to select a live problem in the industry or a major issue impacting the
performance of projects. The topic should be researchable in the given time period and
approved by the University. This should include a description of the problem statement, review
of the literature, scientific design of the study, collection and analysis of data and preparing a
project report in an acceptable academic style. The student will be allotted a guide by the
University. If the student chooses to have a guide from outside, the University will nominate
one of the internal faculty members as a co-guide. Following are the major components of the
project work:
a. Research Methodology and Project Seminar
Students are required to conceptualise a research idea for further study on it at the beginning
of the third semester. The student makes a presentation of the work in the form of a seminar.
b. Project Work (Submission and Viva Voce)
In the fourth semester, the student completes data analysis and submits the thesis for final
evaluation.
iv. Summer Internship
As part of the curriculum, each student undergoes supervised field training with a reputed project
firm for 8 to 10 weeks. During this period, they may be trained in project management practices
such as planning, execution, progress assessment, site management, reporting etc. While the
training is on-the-job, the student is expected to perform certain regular duties on the project as
may be felt fit by the concerned organisation.
Organisations for practical training are carefully selected from amongst reputed firms. Based on
their performance, students may receive a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO). Essentially, the
University looks for meaningful and supervised work experience for the students. Students may
also opt for working on an assignment-based project topic. A committee of students assists the
University in arranging for their summer internship. At the end of the summer internship,
students are required to submit a report and make a presentation to the faculty assigned.

PEDAGOGY
NICMAR University, Pune believes that the method of instruction to maximise learning varies from
course-to-course, and therefore, uses a host of pedagogical approaches in different courses such as
case studies, lectures, group and individual exercises, class projects and simulation of business
environment to enrich the overall Programme delivery. Site visits are organised as and when
required.
The curriculum of MBA APM comprises course work, practice workshops, summer internship and
project work. The relative weightage for each component in the total package of 85 credit points is
shown below.

Course work comprises 60.40% of total inputs while the practice workshops, summer internship
and the project work cover the rest.

DISCIPLINE AND CODE OF CONDUCT


Students shall be courteous and formal in conduct with faculty and staff at all times, failing which
appropriate disciplinary action shall be taken against the erring student. A Code of Conduct for the
students is issued at the time of admission and it is mandatory for all students to abide by it.

The objective of the course is helping students acquire skill of how to comprehend, evaluate and analyse
the financial statements; acquire understanding of the techniques of management accounting and to make

The Course deals with the legal aspect of construction projects in every possible perspective, including
planning, execution, and monitoring. It deals with the Laws relating to prior & post legal compliance of

evaluation of the project work will be conducted as pert the guidelines of the project
work. Students may present papers in conferences / workshops and symposiums /
technical forums to gain confidence of the results and as a value addition to their
project / research work.
