I.M. Lieve Suys (Dendermonde, January 1, 1940 - Antwerp, March 8, 2019)
Lieve Suys inspired me, at the age of six, to become a musician.
In 2012 she premiered my cantata “Kus”, for youth choir with three equal voices, soprano, two boy-
soprano’s and four-handed piano

Lieve Suys
Under the impulse of her father, organist in her hometown of Dendermonde, Lieve Suys became
fascinated by music and theater at a young age. She studied at the Royal Flemish Conservatory in
Antwerp, where she won first prizes for elocution, piano and chamber music and certificates for piano
accompaniment and elocution for singers. She studied singing with Maria Verhaert. At the Mozarteum
she perfected herself in piano and singing; she took conducting courses with Gottfried Wolters, Laszlo
Heltay and Hans Swarowsky.
As a singer, conductor, piano accompanist and
performing artist, she has participated in
numerous performances at home and abroad. In
addition, she was a teacher at the Higher Institute
of Dramatic Art in Antwerp for many years and a
teacher at music academies, 30 of which in
Merksem. In 1978 she founded the renowned
Merksems children's choir, later known as Scaldis
Cantat. Under her leadership, it became an
excellent choir that was sometimes asked to
perform with professional ensembles. The choir
won a first prize "cum laude" at the famous International Music Festival in Neerpelt and made various
concert tours abroad. From 1995 Lieve Suys also worked as a vocal accompanist at the musicals of
the Ballet of Flanders and from 2000 she held a similar position at Studio 100. As a dedicated singing
teacher and choir conductor she has put many young singers on the right path to a professional career.
