Hence SA cylinder is not actuating.
Now to actuate the SA cylinder, We have to push the button of 3/2DC valve .When button

figure. With a meter-in circuit, fluid enters into the actuator at a controlled rate.
Pneumatic circuit diagram for meter-in flow-control circuit is as shown in figure.
In these circuits, the rate of flow of compressed air into the cylinder is controlled
by flow control valve. FCV is placed at inlet of the cylinder. Cap end port “C” is
inlet for extension and rod end port “R” is inlet for retraction.
Working:
In first position of 4/2 DCV, compressed air flows from P to A and B to T. this
flow is through flow control valve, the flow is controlled and hence piston
extends slowly.
In second position 4/2 DCV, compressed air flows P to B and A to T. this flow is
through check valve. This is free flow.
Hence the piston retracts at higher speed, which is not controlled.

opened, some portion of the pump outlet will be bled off and the cylinder starts to
slow down. Adjusting the size of the opening will bleed off any amount
necessary to control the speed of piston. Unlike the meter-in and meter-out
circuit there is no excess flow going over the relief valve. The excess oil bleed-
off circuits are more efficient in energy saving and work in a cooler environment.
However, bleed off circuit provides less accuracy is speed control, because they
don‟t compensate for any change in fluid losses due to pressure change. Here the
measured flow goes to the tank rather than the cylinder. This makes the cylinder
speed subject to change with the pump delivery and hydraulic system leakage
which occur as work load pressure changes. To minimize these effects, it is
recommended to bleed-off no more than half the pump delivery and avoid using
a bleed-off circuit completely where there is a wide fluctuation is the load
pressure. In general, bleed-off speed control is best employed when the majority
of the pump outlet is utilized by the cylinder and only a small percentage is by
past. Also it is employed in systems where the pressure is reasonably constant 02 marks
and precise speed control is not the criteria. –diagram

3 e Draw and explain working of pressure reducing valve. 02 marks

The main function of pressure reducing valve is to reduce the pressure in particular –diagram
branch of the circuit to different level as demanded by consumer in that branch.
Construction: 02 marks
It consists of spool and spring housed in the bore of valve body. Spring compression can – explain
be adjusted by pressure setting screw. Port P is pressure port connected to pump.
Working:
As shown in normal position, port P is supplying oil to consumer port A. If the main
supply is below the set pressure, there will be continuous flow from P to A. Hence
normally this valve is open. When outlet pressure rises to valve setting then oil will flow
through „passage x‟ and will act on spool and spool will shift to right thereby partly
closing the port A. Now only enough flow will pass through port „A‟ so that consumer
connected to A will receive reduced pressure.Port A is consumer port requiring reduced
pressure.

04 b Quick exhaust valve 02marks

A quick exhaust valve is a typical shuttle valve. It consists of a movable disc (also called for figure
flexible ring) and three ports namely, Supply port 1, which is connected to the output of 02 marks
the final control element (Directional control valve). The Output port, 2 of this valve is for
directly fitted on to the working port of cylinder. The exhaust port, 3 is left open to the working
atmosphere.
Forward Motion: During forward movement of piston, compressed air is directly
admitted behind the piston through ports 1 and 2, Port 3 is closed due to the supply
pressure acting on the diaphragm. Port 3 is usually provided with a silencer to minimize

the noise due to exhaust. XXXXX

Return Motion: During return movement of piston, exhaust air from cylinder is directly
exhausted to atmosphere through opening 3 (usually larger and fitted with silencer). Port
2 is sealed by the diaphragm. Thus exhaust air is not required to pass through long and
narrow passages in the working line and final control valve.

Application of a quick exhaust valve:

They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes and are used in the industry to speed
up the performance of a moving cylinder, evacuate air directly out into the atmosphere
and increase the cylinder rod reaction time, or valve actuator. High quality quick exhaust
valves are the key to efficient functions in the industrial segments.
4 c Explain Construction and working of 4/2 DC valve, which is used in hydraulic 02marks
system. for figure
Construction: It consists of a shaft sliding in a bore which has large groove around the
circumference. The spool is sealed along the clearance between moving spool and valve 02 marks
body. The grooves guide the fluid flow by interconnecting or blocking the ports. Spring for
is fitted in bore to bring the spool back to original position. A four way has four ports working
labeled P, T, A and B. P is the pressure inlet port. T is the tank; A and B are outlet ports
to the system.
Working: Sequence valve is nothing but pilot operated relief valve. It has a special spool
having specially drilled oil passage with internal orifice drain is directed to main drain. In
normal position sequence valve is closed when the operation of consumer 1 is completed
pressure starts building and when reaches set value of pilot relief valve fluid flows
through spool to drain/ tank. As the fluid flows through spool the orifice causes pressure
difference between spring side and spool side. This pressure difference results in
differential force which lifts the spool causing it to uncover the port‟ A‟ thus supplying
fluid to another consumer A.

Sectional view of pressure and temperature compensated FCV Graphical symbol

In the static condition, the hydraulic forces hold the compensator spool in balance, but the bias
spring forces it to the far right, thus holding the compensator orifice fully open. In the flow
condition, any pressure drop less than the bias spring force does not affect the fully open
compensator orifice, but any pressure drop greater than the bias spring force reduces the 02 marks
compensator orifice. Any change in pressure on either side of the control orifice, without a for
corresponding pressure change on the opposite side of the control orifice, moves the working
compensator spool. Thus, a fixed differential across the control orifice is maintained at all
times. It blocks all flow in excess of the throttle setting. As a result, flow exceeding the preset
amount can be used by other parts of the circuit or return to the tank via a pressure-relief valve.
Performance of flow-control valve is also affected by temperature changes which changes the
viscosity of the fluid. Therefore, often flow-control valveshave temperature compensation.
Graphical symbol for pressure and temperaturecompensated flow-control valve is shown in

Dead weight type accumulator
• This accumulator consist of sliding piston.
• The oil under pressure usually from pump enters in to the cylinder through port P.
• The pressurized oil forces the piston upwards, until it reaches position B.
• Dead weight W on top of piston rod is in the form of concrete/steel/other heavy
materials.
• When the system demands oil then oil starts flowing out of port P.

Spring loaded type accumulator

• In a spring loaded accumulator, pressure is applied to the fluid by a coil spring behind
the accumulator piston. The pressure is equal to the instantaneous spring force divided
by the piston area. The pressure therefore is not constant since the spring force
increases as fluid enters the chamber and decreases as it is discharged.
• Spring loaded accumulators can be mounted in any position. The spring force, i.e., the
pressure range is not easily adjusted, and where large quantities of fluid are spring size
has to be very large.

Gas charged type accumulator

The most commonly used accumulator is one in which the chamber is pre-charged with an
inert gas, such as dry nitrogen. A gas charged accumulator should be pre-charged while empty
of hydraulic fluid. Accumulator pressure varies in proportion to the compression of the gas,
increasing as pumped in and decreasing as it is expelled.
