A Different Type of Holiday

‘Ecotourism’ describes a holiday that aims to preserve and protect the environment. Its purpose is to
educate the traveller about the environment and the culture of the local community. This type of holiday
wasn’t popular in the past, as it was very expensive. However, in recent years, with low-cost airlines and
cheap accommodation, more people can afford this type of travel.

Luxury in the rainforest

An example of ecotourism is in Infierno in Peru. The place got its name because hundreds of years ago, the
journey there was dangerous. Now, boats carry tourists along the river to comfortable places to stay called

g.
eco-lodges. These lodges are in the middle of the rainforests where visitors can explore and learn more

in
about the amazing rainforest wildlife in its natural habitat.

py
An African adventure

co
The African country of Botswana has many options for the adventurous traveller. The Okavango Delta is an

to
ideal location to see exotic wildlife. The region has some of the largest elephant herds in Africa and offers

ho
a rare opportunity to see these animals close up. Travellers can stay in eco-lodges and go on spectacular
safari trips during the day. They get the opportunity to meet the local people and learn more about their

rp
culture.

Working in ecotourism no
tio
Laos is a country in South East Asia. In a remote area of the country called Luang Namtha, the government
is encouraging the local communities to learn English so that they can earn money from ecotourism. The
bu

area is covered by rainforests, mountains and rivers. Today many people work as tour guides for tourists
tri

who are interested in learning about their culture and their environment. Ecotourism has helped to
