2. a. Figure 1 is the speed-time graph of a moving body. The body starts from
rest and accelerates at 4m/s for t1 seconds to reach the speed of 32m/s. It
then maintains this speed for some time after which it decelerates uniformly
for 5 seconds and stops.

Calculate the distance that the body travels from rest to t 2 seconds.

7. Copy and complete the following table which shows a set of values of x and

8. In a class of 53, candidates were asked if they would be glad to be selected


to colleges of Chanco, Bunda, or Mzuni. 9 candidates said they would be
happy with Chanco and Bunda. 12 candidates said they would be happy
with Bunda and Mzuni. 19 candidates said they would be happy with
Chanco and Mzuni. 5 candidates said they would be happy with Mzuni only,
7 candidates said they would be happy with Bunda only and 11 candidates
said they would be happy with Chanco only. 4 of the candidates liked none
of them.
a. Present the information in above in a Venn diagram. (6 marks)

b. Use the Venn diagram to calculate the number of candidates who would
be happy with all the three colleges. (4 marks)

9. The cost of running an orphanage per day is partly constant and partly varies
as the square of the number of orphans in the orphanage. With 100 orphans
the cost is K40, 000.00 per day. With 160 orphans the cost is K79, 000.00
per day. Find the number of orphans in the orphanage if it spends
K24, 000.00 per day.

12. The school has K50 000 to buy boxes of red and black pens only. Red pens
cost K5 000 per box, while black pens cost K2 000 per box. The school
would like to spend at least K10 000 more on red pens than on black pens
 If x represents the number of red pen boxes and y represents the number
of black pen boxes, write down two inequalities in x and y in addition to
x ≥ 0 and y ≥ 0
 Using a scale of 2 cm to represent 2 units on the horizontal axis and 2 cm
to represent 5 units on the vertical axis, draw the region which represents
the four inequalities on the graph paper on page 17. (Shade the
unwanted region).
 How many red pen boxes and black pen boxes can the school buy to have
the maximum number of pen boxes with K50 000?
