SJD ASSESSMENT 7: WRITTEN ASSESSMENT

1.1.according to South African legislation. Section 141 of the 1996 South African
Constitution and common law both protect the right to privacy. Social media is very
important to our society and provides a convenient means of status and communication
in the modern world. However, despite social media’s many advantages, privacy
concerns exist. It seems as though a person’s communication privacy is being violated
when they share their personal information with businesses or retail markets in
exchange for benefits and have to deal with the possibility of being tracked or inundated
with ads. A person’s choices can occasionally have an impact on their privacy.
Individuals must to understand that whenever someone shares personal information on
social media, such information

1.2A person’s freedom of the press and other media, their ability to receive and transmit
ideas and information, their ability to express themselves artistically, their freedom in
academia, and their ability to do scientific research are all included in their right to
freedom of expression. This does not, however, include advocacy of hatred based on
race, ethnicity, gender, or religion that is considered incitement to damage, propaganda
for war, or encouragement of impending violence. Because thoughts and other types of
expression included in the right to freedom of expression are constantly shared on
social media, this right has profited from it. Depending on the circumstance, social
media helps people; as it continues to expand, more individuals will try to help by
organizing online protests or disseminating the word about it.

1.3The impact of social media on racism has been uneven. Social media tools have, on
the one hand, provided movements and campaigns against racism with a tremendous
voice. Social media sites like Instagram and Twitter have been crucial in bringing
attention to social injustices, particularly in situations where the media may have missed
or disregarded such incidents. Additionally, studies demonstrate that social media
platforms have given people the confidence to discuss race informally. Social media
sites have, meanwhile, also been utilized to disseminate and support racist content.
Individuals have harassed and intimidated others based on their race using social

media. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter have come under fire for how they
handle racist content. Social media can either be an instrument for advancement

2.it has been demonstrated that corruption in the provision of services has a detrimental
impact on human development matric dropout rates, death rates, child mortality rates,
poverty rates and civil unrest.
Corruption in the provision of services raises operating costs, deters domestic and forei
gn investment, warps public spending, lowers economic efficiency, and slows down adm
inistrative procedures—all of which impede progress.
A breakdown in the service delivery chain caused by increased corruption in the sector
can also result in starvation and a shortage of basic medical supplies, since the state ap
paratus is unable to satisfy its obligations to protect its inhabitants. Another
consequence of corruption in the service delivery sector, particularly in the food industry,
is that it encourages dishonesty, when customers receive the food but later inform the
delivery service that they never received it in the hopes of receiving a refund or another
delivery.

3.Ways to Prevent Violence Based on Gender

In order to effectively combat gender-based violence, comprehensive plans involving

multiple stakeholders must be put into place. I would like to make the following
recommendations to the nation’s president:Modifications to Police
Interventions:Sensitization and Training: Give law enforcement personnel specific
instruction on how to handle cases involving gender-based violence, emphasizing
trauma-informed strategies, victim-centered investigations, and an awareness of power
dynamics.Better Reaction: Assure a timely and sympathetic reaction to allegations of
gender-based violence by assigning specialized teams and staff with the necessary
training to deal with these situations.Improved Cooperation: Encourage cooperation
between law enforcement, social workers, and other pertinent organizations to offer
survivors comprehensive support, including access to legal aid, counselling, and
medical attention.Actions Courts Might Take:Create Fast-Track Courts: Set up special
courts to handle gender-based violence more quickly. Instances, guaranteeing prompt
justice and lessening the pain endured by survivors.Specialized Judges and
Prosecutors: Assign judges and prosecutors who have experience handling.cases
involving gender-based violence in a tactful and efficient manner.Protective Measures:
Put in place safeguards for survivors throughout court cases, such as safe rooms on
court property, restraining orders, and anonymity. What Could Be Done by
Society:Consciousness and Instruction: Start national efforts to educate people about
gender-based violence, its effects, and how crucial gender equality is. This should
involve dispelling damaging gender stereotypes and teaching the public about consent
and healthy partnerships.Community Involvement: Promote community participation in
efforts to prevent and resolve gender-based violence by holding community
discussions, organizing support groups, and starting neighborhood watch
programs.Empowering Women: Encourage women’s empowerment by providing them
with access to economic possibilitiesThe part played by regional, national, and local
leadersIn order to guarantee that gender equality and equity are a lived reality in the
lives of women and girls, leaders throughout the continent have a significant role to play
in adopting appropriate legal action. Additionally, they have to take the initiative in
fostering a social consensus that recognizes the importance of women's rights and their
ultimate protection for the advancement of humanity. As a continent, we need to go
beyond frameworks for laws and policies and instead focus on effective execution that
is based on fresh perspectives on eradicating GBV in all of its manifestations.Make
investments in females:It’s been mentioned a lot that a woman who is financially
independent feels emancipated. Thus, in addition to guaranteeing rights and safeguards
under the law, we also need to deliberately spend on females and
woman. We can guarantee that women and girls have access to high-
quality education and training, feel economically empowered, and are more likely to fully
engage in society when governments and international organizations offer targeted and
appropriate support. Assure women's political participation
The fact that so many women are marginalized in society and politics, particularly when
it comes to creating laws and making decisions that have an impact on daily life in the c
ommunity, is one of the main causes of gender-based violence.
This implies that women are still subject to the compound interest of persistent gender i
nequities since many new laws and conventions continue to exclude them.
This holds true at any level of government, from the national parliament to the disaster
preparedness plan of a municipal council.

4. intergrating the Ubuntu values into the criminal justice system

Ubuntu emphasizes the interdependence and connection of individuals within a commu
nity. Its ideals are strongly founded in African philosophy.
Fairness, empathy, and restorative justice can be advanced within the criminal justice s
ystem by using the ideals of Ubuntu.
Criminal justice system employees can apply the following ideas to their everyday work
to incorporate the concepts of Ubuntu:
Ubuntu promotes a change from punitive justice to restorative justice using the restorati
ve justice approach.
Officials in the criminal justice system can give priority to making amends and mending t
he relationships that have been damaged between criminals, victims, and the communit
y.All parties can have a voice and actively participate in the resolution process via mean
s of mediation, dialogue, and community involvement.
Putting Rehabilitation First: Ubuntu acknowledges the potential for each person's
development and change.
Employees in the criminal justice system have the option to take a rehabilitative stance,
which centers on dealing with the underlying reasons of criminal conduct and giving con
victs chances to reintegrate into society.
To encourage personal growth and lower recidivism, this may entail giving people acces
s to social services, education, and skill-training programs.
Ubuntu places a strong emphasis on the value of community interaction and group acou
ntability.Employees in the criminal justice system can actively interact with the communi
ty to learn about their needs, worries, and viewpoints.
Programs for community outreach, discussions, and collaborations with nearby organiza
tions can accomplish this. Integrating the community into decision-
making procedures helps promote accountability and trust.
Ubuntu acknowledges the diversity of cultures and values found in a given society.
Justice for crimes system employees who engage with people from diverse origins
should be courteous and sensitive to cultural differences. This entails
being aware of how cultural norms, values, and customs could affect how someone beh
aves or views justice.Employees working in the criminal justice system can guarantee ju
stice and prevent prejudice and discrimination by embracing cultural sensitivity.
Ethical Behavior: Ubuntu places a strong emphasis on the value of moral conduct and h
onesty.Employees in the criminal justice system have a duty to conduct themselves with
the highest ethical standards. This entails treating everyone with respect and decency, k
eeping information private, and abstaining from corruption and the misuse of authority.E
mployees in the criminal justice system can encourage confidence in the judicial system
by acting ethically. Finally, applying the Ubuntu values to the criminal justice system can
help to foster a more effecient, sensiruve and all encompassing way to achieve
justice.Workers in the criminal justice system can support a system that values social co
hesion, human dignity, and the welfare of all parties involved by embracing restorative j
ustice practices, placing a strong emphasis on rehabilitation, interacting with the commu
nity, being sensitive to cultural differences, and upholding ethical standards. The Republi
c of South Africa's Constitution, which is the ultimate law of the land, upholds the princip
les of democracy, equality, and human dignity.
Ubuntu, a classic African philosophy that emphasizes people's commitment to one anot
her and their interdependence, is one of the values that informs the Constitution.
The tenets of Ubuntu can support a restorative, community-
based approach to justice and rehabilitation in the context of criminal justice.

5.Role model for ethical councelling

There are several possibilities to take into consideration when selecting a role model wh
o exemplifies the attributes that are essential to being ethical.Mahatma Gandhi is one g
uy who sticks out as an ethical role model. Gandhi was a well
known figure in the Indian independence movement as well as a representation of moral
rectitude and peaceful opposition.Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, often known as Mah
atma Gandhi, was a 20thcentury Indian nationalist leader and prophet of nonviolence. “
He was born in Porbandar, India, on October 2, 1869, and passed away in Delhi on Jan
uary 30, 1948”2.Gandhi was raised in a deeply religious household and took the concept
s of ahimsa—the non-injury to all living things—and religious tolerance for granted.
“In England, he pursued his legal studies. From 1888 to 1891, he studied law in
England. In 1893, he moved to South Africa to work for an Indian company. He
developed into a successful Indian rights activist there. Gandhi is a perfect role model
for ethical instruction because of his dedication to truth and nonviolence”3. He lived up
to his belief that the pursuit of truth ought to be the ultimate goal in all facets of life.
Gandhi’s nonviolent philosophy, known as “ahimsa,” was based on his conviction that
using violence only serves to encourage more violence and that real change can only
be brought about by nonviolent means.Gandhi is one of the people I look up to for
ethical leadership because of his unwavering devotion to his values despite hardship.
To protect his principles, he was prepared to make hardships and personal sacrifices.
Gandhi, for instance, organized multiple peaceful demonstrations and acts of civil
disobedience throughout the Indian independence movement, despite threats of
violence and incarceration. His ethical character is demonstrated by his ability to uphold
his values even in the most trying situations.I also respect Gandhi’s emphasis on
equality and inclusivity as a component of his moral leadership. He battled for the rights
of all people, opposing prejudice on the basis of gender, caste, and religion. Gandhi
devoted his life to establishing a society where everyone was treated fairly and with
respect because he believed in the intrinsic value and dignity of every human
being.Gandhi is an inspiration to me because of his humility and simplicity. He was a
prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, although he led a simple life
and did as he taught. He encouraged others to follow his example of leadership.
Gandhi’s simplicity and humility serve as a reminder that moral leadership is about
helping people and improving society, not about having power or material belongings. In
summary, Mahatma Gandhi is a role model who exemplifies the characteristics essential
to an ethical person. His dedication to truth, nonviolence, inclusion, and humility makes
him a role model for moral behavior.Gandhi's unshakable commitment to his beliefs

despite hardship serves as a reminder that moral leadership necessitates selflessness
and a firm resolve to uphold morality.
Gandhi served as an inspiration to us all, and by doing so, we can work toward being m
oral leaders who change the world.

6.Experiences with online learning

I’ve had the chance to participate in online learning during this module, which has been
gratifying and difficult. The flexibility this experience has provided has been one of its
pleasures. I’ve been able to schedule my studies around other obligations because I
can access the course materials and take part in discussions at my own speed. Online
learning has also given me access to a multitude of resources that have improved my
comprehension of the subject matter, like recorded lectures and online discussion
boards. I have, however, also had to overcome certain obstacles, such the requirement
for self-control and drive to remain on course in the absence of the regular classroom
framework. Overall, I’ve had a good experience learning online,

Group communication and discussions

I have participated in group discussions and communication throughout this module, whi
ch has been really helpful for my learning process.
Working together with classmates has given me access to a variety of viewpoints and vi
ews regarding the course subject. The chance to participate in problem-
solving and critical thinking exercises has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of gr
oup talks.By actively participating in group discussions, I have improved my own though
ts and broadened my knowledge by taking into account different points of view.
But there have also been difficulties, like arranging schedules and guaranteeing that ea
ch group member participates equally.
Notwithstanding these difficulties, the cooperative character of group discussions has im
proved my educational experience and promoted a feeling of camaraderie in the virtual
classroom.

Working with other students

A key component of this curriculum has been working with other students, which has
greatly aided my educational process. Working together with peers has helped me to
exchange ideas, make sense of things, and comprehend the course material on a
deeper level. Working with other students has been enjoyable, and one of the best parts
has been getting to participate in peer evaluation and criticism. Through offering and
accepting helpful criticism, I’ve been able to enhance my own work and grow in my
understanding of various viewpoints. But there have also been difficulties, like managing
various work styles and scheduling conflicts. Working with other students has improved
my learning experience and created a sense of camaraderie inside the online learning
environment despite these limitations.
