Past and Past Perfect Tenses

Verbs are words that describe an action or occurrence or indicate a state of being.

Verbs have tense. Tense is the time expressed by a verb.

Regular Verb is one that follows the usual rule for forming its simple past tense.

Irregular Verb do not follow the normal pattern in forming the past tense.

Simple Past and Perfect Tense

Simple Past Tense of the verb is used to express an action that happened and ended in the past.
Commonly, simple past is signaled by time indicators in the past, e.g. last week, last weekend, yesterday, a
year ago, last year, last night, before, when, by the time, etc.

Example: 1. Victoria and Hilario visited their grandparents yesterday.

5. My mom cooked a yummy dish last night.

The Past Perfect Tense portrays an earlier action before another action happened as portrayed by the
simple past tense.
There are time indicators used in indicating past perfect tense. After, as soon as, the
moment that, and until are used before the past perfect tense while last week, last weekend, yesterday, a year
ago, last year, last night, before, when, and by the time are used before simple past tense.

It is usually formed using the following structures:

ORDINARY FORM: had + past participle of the verb

Example 1: Mercy had eaten her breakfast before Juanito asked her to do so.
