Unit: LANGUAGE TESTING AND EVALUATION

Academic Year: 2023 – 2024

AREAS FOR REVIEW

THEORY
1. Concepts: Assessment vs Evaluation.
2. Assessment Qualities (Validity, reliability, practicality, impact).
3. Types (i.e. Formative vs Summative) and Characteristics (i.e. Meanings of formative
assessment).
4. Planning formative assessment: Regular vs Periodic.
5. Formative assessment strategies (i.e. three groups of strategies: “Where are my learners going
in their learning?”, “Where is each learner now?” and “How do I help my learners move forward
in their learning?”).
6. Assessing receptive skills (subskills, can-do statements, items).
7. Assessing productive skills (subskills, tasks, features such as task, writer, reader, scoring
procedure).
8. Assessing language knowledge (e.g. language areas: pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar;
item components: instructions, input, expected response).
9. Providing feedback.
10. Language assessment literacy.

PRACTICE
1. Design a formative assessment task appropriate for a specific material (e.g. a reading text, or a
writing task) provided, using a relevant formative strategy (e.g. success criteria, starter, plenary,
questioning, discussion, self or peer assessment, focused feedback).
2. Develop a summative test task (e.g. interview) or item (e.g. multiple choice questions) to
assess a specific productive or receptive skill (e.g. writing a topic sentence, or reading for
specific information).
TEST
The test is structured around these two parts:
1. The first part includes 20 discrete questions of different types, multiple choice, gap-fill and
matching.
2. The second part includes two practical tasks as described in the previous practice section.
