A review on the poem “The Laburnum Top”

The Laburnum Top is a short and sweet Poem which takes us on a journey into the world of
nature and shows us the beauty of interaction between a tree and bird. The poem describes how
a bird can bring life and energy into an empty tree. The poem starts off with a silent tree with
yellow leaves and fallen seeds in the calm afternoon of September. This peaceful atmosphere
forms a canvas in our mind of the scene. The quietness of the tree is broken when a goldfinch
comes along with a twitching chirrup which injects life in the scene and adds a touch of energy
in the tree. The poem beautifully portrays the bird's entrance into the thickness of the tree, like a
machine starts up of chittering and trilling. The tree responds with a gentle tremor almost
acknowledging the bird's presence. The goldfinch serves as the engine of her family which has
arrived to feed them. The imagery of her "barred face identity mask" portrays her unique
identity while her eerie and delicate chirrup adds a sense of mystique upon her departure. She
launches herself towards the infinite, symbolizing the limitless possibilities that the nature
embodies. As the goldfinch departs, the tree settles back into stillness as if all its energy is gone
with the bird and it will reside in silence until the bird returns again. The poem's beauty lies in
its simplicity and the delicate interplay of imagery, through which the poem leaves the readers
to ponder upon the small yet delicate moments in nature.

In conclusion, "The laburnum Top" is lovely poem that, with the use of many poetic devices
like imagery and simile, shows us that even the simplest things, like the tree and the bird can
create a beautiful moment in nature. This poem truly is a short yet captivating composition and
a testament to the power of poetry.
