1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The task of conducting geotechnical investigation for the proposed Hostel building
construction at T. BEGURU, Nelamangala is undertaken by us. Accordingly, the
investigation was carried out and this report consists of the details about the various
field tests and laboratory tests performed and the recommendations made based on the
results of the tests.
The primary objective of this investigation is,
1. To establish the ground condition at the site through field and laboratory testing.
2. To assess the allowable bearing pressure based on field and laboratory testing.
3. To recommend on the depth and type of foundation for the proposed structure.
Four bore holes are drilled in the present investigation and the location of these
boreholes is shown in Fig.1.

Representative / undisturbed samples were collected at different depth as the bore holes
were sunk. The undisturbed samples are collected at an interval of 1.5m or at every
change in strata, whichever occurred earlier. The samples collected were used for
different laboratory test.
3.2FIELD TESTING:
(a) Standard penetration test.
Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted at different depths in all the bore holes
as the borehole was advanced down and the ‘N’ values were recorded. The SPT was
carried out according to 1S 2131-1981 SPT (Standard penetration test, Re affirmed
in1992). The number of blows required to drive a 50mm diameter split spoon sampler
for a depth of 30cm using a 65 kg hammer, having a free fall of 75cm, is recorded as ‘N’

Typical calculation
At 4.0m depth in BH:1,
Nq = e tan tan2 (45 + /2) dc = 1+0.2 (Df /B) tan (45 + /2)
= e tan30 tan2 (45 + 30/2) = 1+ 0.2 (4.0/1.0) tan (45 +30/2)
= 18.40 = 2.39
For Weathered rock : As per IRC:78 – 2000, for Weathered Rocks the allowable bearing
values suggested is not more than 1.0 MPa (100 t/m2 ). Considering this and the nature
of weathered rock encountered a safe Bearing Capacity of 60 t/m2 is recommended.
For Soft Rock (fractured Rock) : As per IS 12070 – 1987, Table -2 the net safe bearing
pressure is 100 t/m2 and as per IRC:78 – 2000, for soft Rocks the allowable bearing
pressure is 1.0 to 2.0 MPa. Considering these two aspects a safe Bearing Capacity of 100
t/m2 is recommended.
