REPORT ON THE GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR THE
PROPOSED HOSTEL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AT
T. BEGUR, NELAMANGALA

PROPOSED PROJECT : Hostel Building

LOCATION : T Begur, Nelamangala, Bangalore Dist,

Karnataka State, India

CLIENT’S NAME : M/s. Sri Siddhartha Institute of Medical

Sciences and Research Centre
T. Begur, Nelamangala Taluk

1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The task of conducting geotechnical investigation for the proposed Hostel building
construction at T. BEGURU, Nelamangala is undertaken by us. Accordingly, the
investigation was carried out and this report consists of the details about the various
field tests and laboratory tests performed and the recommendations made based on the
results of the tests.
The primary objective of this investigation is,
1. To establish the ground condition at the site through field and laboratory testing.
2. To assess the allowable bearing pressure based on field and laboratory testing.
3. To recommend on the depth and type of foundation for the proposed structure.

2.0 SCOPE OF THE WORK:

The scope of work includes,
i) Drilling the boreholes at the specified location using rotary drilling as specified by the
client.
ii) Conducting Standard Penetration test in soil at every 1.5m depth or where ever strata
changes up to the Refusal Strata
iii) Collecting undisturbed and Representative Soil /Rock samples in each of the strata for
the laboratory tests.
iv) Conducting suitable laboratory tests on Soil and Rock samples for different Index and
Engineering properties.

Four bore holes are drilled in the present investigation and the location of these
boreholes is shown in Fig.1.

3.0 FIELD INVESTIGATION:
3.1 BORING AND SAMPLING:
150 mm dia boring was carried out in accordance with IS: 1892: -1979 Code of Practice
for sub-surface investigation of foundation (1992) using rotary drilling up to Hard rock.
Accordingly the depth of Bore holes drilled is shown in Table:1.

Representative / undisturbed samples were collected at different depth as the bore holes
were sunk. The undisturbed samples are collected at an interval of 1.5m or at every
change in strata, whichever occurred earlier. The samples collected were used for
different laboratory test.

3.2FIELD TESTING:
(a) Standard penetration test.
Standard penetration tests (SPT) were conducted at different depths in all the bore holes
as the borehole was advanced down and the ‘N’ values were recorded. The SPT was
carried out according to 1S 2131-1981 SPT (Standard penetration test, Re affirmed
in1992). The number of blows required to drive a 50mm diameter split spoon sampler
for a depth of 30cm using a 65 kg hammer, having a free fall of 75cm, is recorded as ‘N’

value. The test is halted if,

i) 50 blows are required for any 150 mm penetration
ii) 100 blows are required for 30cm penetration
iii) 10 successive blows produce no advance
And correspondingly the N – value is recorded as “REFUSAL”.
Table: 2gives the detail about the SPT tests performed

Laboratory Tests were performed to evaluate both index and engineering properties of
the soil samples collected during boring. All the tests are performed as per IS
recommendations. Table 3 presents these details.

6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS:
Based on the extensive field investigation and laboratory testing, the following
conclusions and recommendations are drawn.

6.1 ALLOWABLE BEARING PRESSURE:

Both shear failure and settlement criteria are considered while arriving at the final value
of Allowable Bearing pressure. The values of allowable bearing pressure are calculated at
different depth . This helps the structural designer to select the allowable bearing
pressure at the required depth depending on the structural loading. The following
allowable bearing pressure, which gives a factor of safety of 3.0 against shear failure and
for an allowable settlement of 25 mm is recommended.

Location: Hostel Building at T. Begur

4.0 1.0 3.0 60

(in weathered Rock)
5.5 2.5 4.5 100
(in weathered Rock)
-- --
In hard Rock 200

Note :
i) The site had been excavated to a depth of 3.0m at
location BH:1& BH:2 AND to 1.0m depth at location
BH:3 & BH:4
ii) At location BH:2, Ground / Seepage water is
encountered at about 6.0m depth below the
excavated depth, during investigation.
iii) Increase the above values at a rate of 1.8 t/m 2 for
every metre depth of excavation, if a basement floor
is constructed.

6.2 MINIMUM DEPTH:

The minimum depth of foundation should be at least 1.5m below the natural ground
level. Any compressible, loose, filled –up top soil should be avoided as the foundation
base. For the present structure the minimum depth of foundation is 4.0m from
the basement floor level / 1.5m from the basement floor level.

JOB NO: GF017657

Page |7
6.3 TYPE OF FOUNDATION:
The type of foundation at a given Allowable bearing pressure is controlled by the
magnitude and type of loading.
* Individual/ Combined footing may be designed with the above recommended
Allowable Bearing pressures and all the column footings should be
proportioned for equal settlement.
* The area of coverage of the footings should not be more than half of the total
Construction area. If so, a Raft Foundation system is recommended.
 The raft shall be placed at a minimum depth of 1.50m below the basement
floor level.
 Modulus of Sub grade Reaction
Since a specific determination of modulus of subgrade reaction (plate load test
not conducted) is not done, the following value of Modulus Sub grade Reaction
can be considered, as per Table – 1, Appendix – B, IS 2950 – (Part – 1) -1981.

Modulus of Subgrade
Soil TYPE
Reaction

Brownish to Grayish brown Clayey sand 8.0 kg/cm3

6.4 RETAINING WALL:

For the design of retaining wall, the following soil parameters shall be considered.

In Weathered Rock : Density of soil,  = 1.90 g/cc

Angle of Internal friction,  = 300

6.6 OTHER PRECAUTIONS:

(i) Any accumulation of water in the foundation trench should be avoided before
Concreting for the foundation.
(ii) The bottom of the foundation trench should be well compacted before
Concreting.
(iii) Proper precautions shall be taken to prevent side wall collapse during
excavation for foundation and Basement.

Shape factors: Sc= 1.3, Sq = 1.2, S = 0.8

Substituting the above factors in,

Qf = cNcScdc+  D(Nq- 1) Sqdq + 0.5BN Sd

Qf =342.66 t/m2
Using a factor of safety of 3.0, Qa = 114.22 t/m2
Limit to 60 t/m2

For Weathered rock : As per IRC:78 – 2000, for Weathered Rocks the allowable bearing
values suggested is not more than 1.0 MPa (100 t/m2 ). Considering this and the nature
of weathered rock encountered a safe Bearing Capacity of 60 t/m2 is recommended.

For Soft Rock (fractured Rock) : As per IS 12070 – 1987, Table -2 the net safe bearing
pressure is 100 t/m2 and as per IRC:78 – 2000, for soft Rocks the allowable bearing
pressure is 1.0 to 2.0 MPa. Considering these two aspects a safe Bearing Capacity of 100
t/m2 is recommended.

Calculation of Allowable Bearing Pressure of Rock

Reference: IS 12070 – 1987

From the laboratory test result,
Uniaxial compressive strength for Hard Rock (BH:1) = 2880 t/m2
Taking the Worst condition of very closely spaced joints, Nf = 0.1
Safe bearing pressure = qc x Nf
= 2880 x 0.1
= 288 t/m2
(with a factor of safety of 3.0)
But limited to 200 t/m2 (due to low RQD)
