GEOGRAPHY OF INDIA & DISASTER MANAGEMENT (MODULE-II)
(PRELIMS PAPER – I AND GS MAINS PAPER – I & III)
The UPSC syllabus for Civil Services Examination (Pre-cum-Mains) contains the following themes which
fall under the purview of Geography. Geography is a core area of the General Studies' syllabus.
Preliminary Exam:
• Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
(Number of questions asked range between 10 and 15)
Main Exam
• Distribution of key natural resources across the world (including South Asia and the Indian sub-
continent); factors responsible for the location of primary, secondary, and tertiary sector
industries in various parts of the world (including India)
• Important Geophysical and their location - changes in critical geographical features (including
water-bodies and ice-caps) and in flora and fauna and the effects of such changes.

GS Paper – III:
• Major crops cropping patterns in various parts of the country, different types of irrigation and
irrigation systems.
All the above portions of the syllabus will be covered in Geography Modules I & II. The approach is
conceptual, factual and also deals with the applications. The Module- I will cover Geomorphology,
Climatology, Oceanography, Human and Economic Geography along with Indian Geography.
Environment ecology & Biodiversity will be discussed in Module-II. The study is interdisciplinary and
multidisciplinary as to understand all the parts in an integrated manner.
The module is designed in such a way that it helps us thoroughly and conceptually to understand
geography as a discipline can be split broadly into two main subsidiary fields: Human Geography and
Physical Geography. The former largely focuses on the built environment and how humans create, view,
manage, and influence space. The latter examines the natural environment, and how organisms, climate,
soil, water, and landforms produce and interact. Also it covers the environmental geography, which
combines the physical and the human geography, and looks at the interactions between the
environment and humans.
This module will have multiple home exercises comprising of both MCQ type and Descriptive
questions.
