Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as the presentation of another person’s work as your own. It is a particular form of cheating.
Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and students who break the rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is
your responsibility to ensure that you understand correct referencing practices. As a university level student, you are
expected to use appropriate references throughout and keep carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials
for material you have used in your work, including any material downloaded from the Internet.

In this be the case, Emirates Aviation University considers plagiarism as theft and any student found to have
plagiarised would be awarded an automatic fail for the piece of work submitted and may be excluded from further
study at the University.

Questions:

Q1) The pressure, volume, and temperature at the beginning of the compression of an otto cycle are 101 kPa, 0.03 m3
and 18 ℃ , respectively. The maximum pressure of the cycle is 4.5 MPa . The compression ratio of the cycle is 19 :1.
Determine for the cycle

(a) The pressure, volume, and temperature at each of the cycle process change points.
(b) Thermal efficiency
(c) Net power

For the air, take R=0.287 kJ /kgK , γ =1.4

Q2) The pressures at the beginning and end of the adiabatic compression of an otto cycle are 103.5 kPa and
1.85 MPa, respectively. Determine for the cycle

(a) The compression ratio

(b) The thermal efficiency

Q3) 0.5 kg of air is taken through a diesel cycle. The pressure and temperature of the air at the beginning of the
adiabatic compression are 96.5 kPa and 15 ℃ , respectively. The pressure ratio of the compression is 6 :1. Constant
pressure heat addition occurs until the volume is doubled. Determine for the cycle

(a) Thermal efficiency

(b) The heat received
(c) The net work done

Q4) In an ideal Diesel cycle the pressure and temperature at the beginning of the adiabatic compression are 98.5 kPa
and 60 ℃ , respectively. The maximum pressure attained during the cycle is 4.5 MPa and the heat received during the
cycle is 580 kJ /kg . Determine for the cycle:

(a) Compression ratio

(b) Temperature at the end of compression
(c) Temperature at the end of heat addition
(d) Temperature at the end of the adiabatic expansion
(e) Specific net work done
(f) Thermal efficiency
