Sample Means from a Finite Population is one that consists of fixed number if
elements.
Steps in Constructing the Sampling Distribution of the Means

1. Compute the population mean.

2. Compute the population variance.
3. Determine the number of possible samples.
4. List all possible samples and their corresponding means.
5. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.
6. Compute the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
7. Compute the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample means.
8. Construct the histogram.

Example: Consider a population consisting of 1,2,3,4, and 5. Suppose samples of size

3 are drawn from this population. Compute the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean.
Step 1:

μ=

Sample Means from an Infinite Population contains hypothetically at least infinite

number of elements.
Example: A population has a mean of 60 and a standard deviation of 5. A random
sample of 16 measurements is drawn from this population. Describe th sampling
distribution of the sample means by computing its mean and standard deviation.
μ=60 , σ=5 , n=16
μ X =μ=60
σ 5 5
σ X= = = =1.25
√ n √16 4
E. Discussing new concepts and (The teacher will present a video presentation)
practicing new skills #2.
F. Developing mastery (Leads to “You Try”
formative Assessment 3) Consider a population consisting of 1,2,3,4, and 5. Suppose samples of size 2 are
drawn from this population. Compute the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean.
G. Finding practical applications of The sampling and sampling distributions of the sample mean can apply to solve real- (The answer of the students may vary)
concepts and skills in daily living. life problems in different disciplines can you give some examples?
H. Making generalizations and “Wrap Up”
abstractions about the lesson. What is Sample Means from a Finite Population? Is one that consists of fixed number if elements?
How about Sample Means from an Infinite Population? contains hypothetically at least infinite number of elements
I. Evaluating learning. “Answer Me”
1. Given the population 1,3,4,6, and 8. Suppose samples of size 3 are drawn
from this population. Describe the sampling distribution of the sample means.
What is the mean and variance of the sample means.
2. The heights of male college students are normally distributed with mean of 68
inches and standard deviation of 3 inches. If 80 samples consisting of 25
students each are drawn from the population, what would be the expected
mean and standard deviation of the resulting sampling distribution of the
means?
S J. Additional activities for application or Remediation:
remediation. Direction: Analyze and solve the problem below.
A random sample of n=60 measurements is obtained from a population with μ=192
and σ =43. Describe the sampling distribution for the sample means by computing the
μ X and σ X .
Enrichment:
Advance study about Central Limit Theorem
