Sacrament of Initiation

- Accomplished by 3 sacraments together. Baptism which is the beginning of new


life, confirmation which its strengthening; and the Eucharist which nourishes the
disciple with Christ’s body and Blood for his transformation in Christ.
Baptism
-Takes away our original sin grace as well as personal sins.

- Person will receives sanctifying grace and is sealed with a permanent spiritual mark.
Baptism imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual sign.
-Signifies baby’s entrance into the church.
- Birth into the new life in Christ.
- A person is immersed into water, goes all the way into the water and then comes out.
Sometimes water is poured over a person’s head.
- Adult can still be part of Christianity through the process of Rite of Christian Initiation of
adult.
- Baptized with two oils, the oil of cetechumens is put on the chest, chrism is put on the
top of the head.
- Oil symbolized strength and healing.
- A candle is lit – person being baptized is asked to keep the flame of faith alive in his or
her heart.

Confirmation
- Necessary for the completion of baptismal grace.
- By the sacrament of confirmation, the baptize are more perfectly bound to the
Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit.
- It incorporates us more firmly into Christ, strengthen our bond with the Church,
associate us more closely with her mission, and help us bear witness to the
Christian faith in words accompanied by deeds.
- Receice only once in one’s life.
- In the East, it is administered right after the baptism, in the latin church, baptized
should be in the age of reason.
- Anointing the forehead with sacred chrism,together with the laying on of the
minister’s hand and the words; “Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti” ( Be
sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit)
- Why slap on the cheek is part of the celebration of the Sacrament of
Confirmation?
- One should be willing to suffer the pain, the slap on the cheek was a symbolic
gesture intended to remind us of the fact that we may have to endure suffering
for our faith.
- Proper disposition – refers to the recipient’s willingness to cooperate with the
gifts of the sacrament.
- Sacrament of Confirmation helps a person to remain faithful to his or her
baptismal commitment to witness to Christ and serve others.
- Wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, piety, and fear of the
Lord, are divine aids to Christian living
Eucharist
- The holy Eucharist that completes the Christian initiation. Raised by the Baptism
and configured more by Confirmation will participate with the whole community in
the Lord’s own sacrifice by means of Eucharist.
- Heart and the summit of the Church’s life.
- The church recommends receiving Holy Communion when participate in the
celebration of the Eucharist; obliges them to do so at least once a year.
- A person that is not baptized won’t be able to receive the sacrament of Eucharist.
- Traditional meal is when we share conversation with someone while Eucharist is
when we come together to share bread and wine and to enter into conversation
with the Lord.
- Receiving Holy Communion is to abstain for at least one hour from all the food
and drink, except water.
