INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this study is to explore the influence of social media whether it is a positive or negative
of every individuals, the influence of social media on human behavior and mental health is undeniable.
Analyzing this influence is crucial for understanding how online interactions shape our thoughts and
emotions. This brief explore the multifaceted impact of social media on behavior, mental well-being
dynamics, aiming to uncover insights that inform strategies for promoting healthier online engagement in
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
Social identity theory (SIT) suggests that Indigenous students' social identities are influential in how
they see themselves and interact with others. Importantly, SIT posits that Indigenous students are
motivated to achieve a positive sense of social identity which is largely established through comparison
with other groups. Thus, while being a part of a socially valued or dominant group can bolster self-
esteem, membership in a less socially valued or non-dominant group threatens self-esteem, this
Self-Categorization Theory
Social identity refers to the ways that people's self-concepts are based on their membership in social
groups. Examples include sports teams, religions, nationalities, occupations, sexual orientation, ethnic
groups, and gender. This theory addresses the ways that social identities affect people's attitudes and
The social comparison theory suggests that people subconsciously make comparison between
themselves and others. It suggests that when people are uncertain of something, they use those around
them to define their understanding of the topic. There are three kinds of social comparison theory, these
are upward social comparison (USC), downward social comparison (DSC), lateral social comparison
(LSC) this takes place when we compare ourselves with others who we believe are better than us in
some way. We often feel inferior as a result of upward comparison. Downward social comparison
who we see as being worse off. Hence, the focus is on making ourselves feel better about our own
situation, assets, or skills. Lateral social comparison (LSC) this refers to comparing yourself to someone
you see as “equal” to you in various areas. Most likely, this person would be a peer, as we tend to
This theory (Spiral of silence) suggests that people are less likely to express their opinions if they
believe that there views are not shared by the majority of their peers. This theory is based on the idea
that people tend to self-censor when they feel their views are not supported by the majority.
These theories provide comprehensive frameworks for understanding how social identities,
comparison processes, and communication dynamics on social media platforms influence individuals'
behavior and mental well-being. They highlight the significance of Indigenous students' social identities
in shaping their self-esteem and engagement, explore the influence of social group membership on
individuals self-concepts, elucidate how comparisons with others on social media impact perceptions of
self-worth and mental health, and shed light on the dynamics of online communication and self-
censorship. Together, these theories offer valuable insights into the complex interplay between social
media use, social identity, comparison processes, and communication dynamics, particularly among
Indigenous students.

Related Studies
A large majority of the people throughout the world own a smartphone and access social media on a
daily basis. Because of this digital attachment, the author sought to understand to what extent this use
has impacted the users’ emotional well-being Christensen, Spencer Palmer (Social Media Use and Its
Impact on Relationships and Emotions 2018) revealed that the more time an individual spent on social
media the more likely they were to experience a negative impact on their overall emotional well being
and decreased quality in their relationships. Emotional well-being also mediated the relationship
between time spent using social media and the quality of that user’s relationships, meaning that the
more time a person spent on social media the more likely their emotional well being declined which then
Social media use has both positive and negative influences on adolescents psychological and
psychological well-being, increased self-esteem, and increased connections with others . Negative
influences include symptoms of depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders, increased risk-taking
behaviors, increased defiant behaviors, and an increase for cyberbullying. Overall, bringing awareness
to the support available for students, conversations on safe and healthy internet use, and a safe place
for students to talk about their difficulties are key factors for educators to consider when working with
adolescent students.
