In senior one you learnt of the relationship between the earth and sun, do you

remember what you learnt, discuss with your neighbour, after doing activity 22.1 you
will be remained of the relationship between the earth and the sun.
ACTIVITY 21.1: UNDERSTANDING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE EARTH AND
THE SUN.
In groups, study figure 21.1 and do the tasks that follow:

1. Identify the difference between the rays striking the earth by:
a) The rays that move the shortest distance to reach the earth
b) The rays that move the longest distance to reach the earth
c) The rays that reach the earth when still very hot
2. Discuss how this affects the temperatures and seasons of the earth.
3. Share your findings with the rest of the class through a discussion
From the previous activity, you have probably foundout that temperature decrease as
one moves away from the equator. This happens because sun’s rays are dispersed over a
wide area of land. The distance travelled by the sun rays to strike different places varies.
The distance is short at the equator while at the poles it is which causes the difference
in temperatures received in different areas of the earth.
You also noticed that when the sun rays strike the northern hemisphere most directly,
the southern hemisphere receives little heat as sun rays strike at a low angle. Also, when
the sun rays strike the southern hemisphere most directly, the northern hemisphere
receives little heat as sun rays strike at the low angle. This explains the occurrence of
seasons
