Sharing Best Practices

Name: Bob Levin Email: bobl@fsusd.org

School: Grange Middle School Grade/Subject: 8th Engish

Content Area Focus: Writing

CA Standard for the Teaching Profession (CSTP): 1.2 Connecting learning to students’ prior
knowledge, backgrounds, life experiences, and interests.

Description: Family Holiday Sharing - Write an expository paragraph or essay about your life and a
special holiday you celebrate.

Objective: The topic connects to the student's past life and experiences and honors them. The
writing standard is to write an expository essay, using sentence frames as scaffolding for EL
students and SPED.

Implementation (What did you do?): Give an example from my family, and explain why it was special.
Plan and write the essay in class and as homework. Have the Sentence Frames prewritten, and a
whole essay example that walks the class through planning, drafting, editing, and peer review. They
will also read the essay out loud to the teacher, one on one.

Differentiation (How might you adjust for EL/Special Populations/others?): give sentence frames and
allow voice-to-text apps. Allow for alternative or shorter assignments as well.

Reflection (Why did you find this practice to be effective?): This lesson teaches inclusivity and gives
kiddos choices. Most people enjoy sharing details about themselves with a teacher they trust, and a
class where they feel safe. It helps to build a bond with the students and builds their skills in written
and oral language.

Helpful Hints: Have sentence frames done in advance
