Work: is the change of energy.

-When a force acts upon an object to cause a displacement of the object, it is said
that work was done upon the object.
-Unit of work is: Newton . meter = Joule which is the unit of energy too.

W=Fd
Where W: Work
F: the force acts on an object
d: displacement in the direction of the force

Energy is the ability

to do work

Kinetic Energy: Gravitational Potential Energy: Elastic Potential Energy:

Energy due to motion Energy stored due to height Energy stored in spring
(K.E) = ½ m v2 (P.E)= m g h when stretched or
m: mass w: weight of the object compressed
v : speed m: mass of the object (P.E)e = ½ k x2
g: gravitational acceleration k: spring constant
h: vertical height x: distance of stretching
or compression
1
Conservation of energy:
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred from one form into another.

At the highest point gpe is max. and KE is min. as the height decreases gpe decreases and KE
increases, at the lowest point kE becomes max. and gpe becomes min.
(gpe)top = (KE) bottom

Mechanical Energy (M.E):

The total mechanical energy in a system (the sum of the potential and kinetic energies) remains
constant if there is no frictional force and air resistance force.

M.E = P.E + K.E is always the constant at all points

In any energy transfer, there is energy wasted as heat due to friction or air resistance.

Power: is the rate at which work is done. It is measured in Watts (W) = J/s

Work F. d
Power = time
=
time

-------> Power = W/t

Efficiency: the percentage of useful energy over the total input energy.
